If the web site were to disappear today, I'd have no forum, no access to the backup, and no way to contact the admin/moderators/users of the forum.

Before The hardest sudokus (new thread) there was The hardest sudokus that covers the period May 2006 to Jan 2009. May be worth saving a local copy?

Out of curiosity, anyone using the methods I've described before to save your most valued threads!!
This thread is now 5 pages, and you only have to retrieve the full (containing 15 posts) previous pages once.
This messes up the pagination at the top and bottom of the page, I now have:
Page 1: 1 of 3
Page 2: 2 of 3
Page 3: 3 of 3
Page 4: 4 of 5
Page 5: 5 of 5
You can:
- ignore the pagination as not a big issue (my current choice)
- repaginate manually by editing the files
- automate, write a script to update the files
- or just get all the files again!

if you have "Page 3: 3 of 3",
i'd worry that it is incomplete (<15)
    — or did you save it exactly at 15 before next page started?

It's just something to be aware of. The last post in Page 3 is one of mine, and I did a get immediately after!
My own Patterns Game saved pages have 'staggered' pagination but I know they are all complete (=15), except the last one which always gets refetched on the next update (every 5 games or so). A script to repaginate would be useful, but I dont need one at the moment. I'll probably write one in a few weeks/months time!

Edit: For a quick check on posts count, you can use grep.exe (which is not a Windows installed program), e.g.
Code: Select all
grep.exe -c "class=""post " *.html
or
grep.exe -c "class=\"post " *.html

[There are different flavors of grep!]

Code: Select all
hardest-thread-disappeared-t40014-15.html:15
hardest-thread-disappeared-t40014-30.html:15
hardest-thread-disappeared-t40014-45.html:15
hardest-thread-disappeared-t40014-60.html:6
hardest-thread-disappeared-t40014.html:15

you do need to refresh your p.3
as someone (you) edited that last post the next day

Yes. In this case (short thread) I can refresh p3, or just get all 5 pages next time.
In my scheme of things and tracking larger and more threads, I'll miss a few of these edited pages.

Any news/progress from your programmer (who should feel free to contact me if that might be useful)? Thanks,

No. I'm sorry. I'll bring it up in our meeting today.

perhaps it just crashed
and this prompted them to transfer to another server.

or maybe, the reverse:
they transferred — and it was the transfer which caused the crash.

either way, since that time we may be in a new situation
with g.r.emlin running in same box as the forum.

should be ok (worked fine for a couple of months),
but who knows the effect when g.r.emlin has a glitch?

i remember gsf described g.r.emlin as "magic"...
