What am I (MJ 1)

Anything goes, but keep it seemly...

You started out with:

What am I?

and now it's:

Who am I?

Which one am I:?:

Or are both relevant:?:

(a) a vocal entertainer?

(b) a sportsman?

(a) Yes, so long as you don't restrict that to mean singing.

(b) Yes to this as well, though I'm not sure that many outside of the States would know this.

Are you David Hasselhoff? I don't know if his swimming on Baywatch qualifies as sports related though?

I am quite definitely a what. Not a person.

The "David" clue will help your thinking on the others. There certainly is something to a name, as the David I am thinking of has discovered.

Not Soul or Hasselhoff.

Time for a consolidation.
The primary clues are:
I am an unusual juxtaposition of categories for my type.

David's clothing signifies.
Faced with a choice, it breaks all ties!

Sprinkler systems may be employed to find me.

Additional information includes:
I am not the mathematical one.

The David in question uses his voice to entertain, but does not sing. He is also a sportsman.

Are you a sea-lion?

David's clothing is a cape although he has eschwed wearing it for aesthetic reasons. He doesn't sing but barks in his act. You sprinkle water into the pool to attract him. Singh Cape in Thailand means Lion Cape (hence the lion bit).

Well, are you an animal, at least?

The sprinkler system & ties got me thinking about.....

Missiles & "Memento mori"

If that is the case then our David won an olympic gold medal for USA

Did I HIT the target:D

Missiles? No.

The sport David is involved with is not an olympic event. He and a family member have reported on them, after a fashion, but were not responsible the winning of any medals.

"Memento mori" is not a hit, but it could be argued that it is a graze.

If only for the purposes of elimination, is it:?:

Just to explain my wrong assumptions.......

I was thinking of SILK

worm........ you can reveal them with a sprinkler system ---->SILKWORM (also a Chinese missile)
David........ DAVID SILK was A hockey legend
Ties & clothes ....... No need to explain here

The silkworm other name is "Bombyx mori"

You know, I think I have made a dog's breakfast of this whole thing. I tried to take a 20 questions variant that we play (think of the answer--give a clue to the answer--if someone comes up with an alternate answer that fits the clues so far then you give another clue that has to exclude the alternate answer) and turn it into a riddle.

So if you are willing to change modes to the variant I have spelled out above, I will give the following clues in response to "silk"

The materials I'm made up of have been used in clothing, but it is pretty uncommon clothing, especially taken together.

Also, since the sprinkler clue probably requires regional knowledge, you could say that a woodpecker or a shrike has been employed to find me as well.

...So I am not any type of insect as well. My unusual construction probably means I am less likely to harbor them though.

Yes, I am a work of art (stop smirking up there, David).

Yes, I am an inanimate object.

You could find me in a house. My rarity prohibits me from considering myself a household object, though.

I am not a plant.
