Here is one with 42 clues, 39 of them "partnered".

Code: Select all
1 2 3 . 6 . . . 8
4 5 6 . . 8 . 1 .
7 8 9 . . 1 6 . .
. . . 2 . 6 1 8 .
8 . . . 1 3 . . 6
. 6 1 8 7 . . . .
. . 8 1 . . 9 6 3
. 1 . 6 . . 8 5 2
6 . . . 8 . 7 4 1

Mauricio, that's also very impressive.

However, I suggest that these puzzles be posted with the symmetry about the r1c1-to-r9c9 diagonal, as JPF did. Then the puzzle can be loaded into Excel -- or other software with a transpose function -- and compared to a transposed copy.

AFAIK Excel does not have a 90-degree rotate function ... so as to do the same with for puzzles with symmetry about the r1c9-to-r9c1 diagonal.

Sorry, I never seem to remember which is defined to be the anti-diagonal.

Thanks.

Your puzzle is a mixed animal :
diagonal symmetry for the cell-clues
anti-diagonal symmetry for almost (-3) the digit-clues
Nice.

Nice, Claudia
Puzzle = 23 (diagonal)symmetrical clues + 1 single r9c7=9
SE = 7.3

Let's have a look at the symmetrical part of the puzzle :
Code: Select all
 *-----------*
 |...|96.|..7|
 |...|..8|51.|
 |..3|..1|...|
 |---+---+---|
 |9..|...|1..|
 |6..|...|..5|
 |.81|...|4.6|
 |---+---+---|
 |.5.|1.4|2..|
 |.1.|...|...|
 |7..|.56|...|
 *-----------*   4 solutions

Simple Sudoku solves some cells :
Code: Select all
 *-----------*
 |1..|96.|..7|
 |.6.|..8|51.|
 |..3|..1|...|
 |---+---+---|
 |9..|6..|1..|
 |6..|.1.|..5|
 |.81|...|4.6|
 |---+---+---|
 |.5.|1.4|2..|
 |.1.|...|.5.|
 |7..|.56|..1|
 *-----------*

 *--------------------------------------------------------------------*
 | 1      24     58     | 9      6      235    | 38     2348   7      |
 | 24     6      79     | 2347   2347   8      | 5      1      2349   |
 | 58     79     3      | 2457   247    1      | 689    2689   2489   |
 |----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
 | 9      2347   2457   | 6      48     2357   | 1      2378   238    |
 | 6      2347   247    | 48     1      2379   | 3789   23789  5      |
 | 235    8      1      | 2357   2379   2379   | 4      2379   6      |
 |----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
 | 38     5      689    | 1      3789   4      | 2      67     389    |
 | 2348   1      2689   | 2378   23789  2379   | 67     5      3489   |
 | 7      2349   2489   | 238    5      6      | 389    3489   1      |
 *--------------------------------------------------------------------*

But in addition, 3 more cells can be solved : r4c9=r9c4=r6c6=2

Instead of r9c7(G9*) = 9, you can pick other clues :
Code: Select all
    Clues       S.E.

   E8 = 9       8.5
   E8 = 8       8.4
   E7 = 9       7.8
   G9 = 9       7.3
   H9 = 8       7.2
   G9 = 8       7.2
   E7 = 8       1.5
   H9 = 9       1.5

Here's an absolutely symmetrical puzzle :

39 clues, diagonal symmetry.
Code: Select all
 1 . . | . . 9 | 7 5 6
 . 5 . | . . 1 | 9 3 4
 . . 9 | . 5 . | 1 2 8
-------+-------+-------
 . . . | 7 . . | . . 9
 . . 5 | . 9 . | 3 4 .
 9 1 . | . . 3 | . . .
-------+-------+-------
 7 9 1 | . 3 . | 4 . .
 5 3 2 | . 4 . | . 9 .
 6 4 8 | 9 . . | . . 3       2 solutions

  • no cell can be solved ; the 2 solutions don't have any common digits except the given clues
  • in each empty cell, only 2 digits are possible to make a valid puzzle.

Postby claudiarabia » Fri Jan 12, 2007 10:29 pm

this is an adaptation of a puzzle I found as the Nr. 10 (hard) in Nikoli's free website made by Takei Daisuke.
I changed one clue r2c5 from 7 to 9 to get the following puzzle
Code: Select all
5 . . . . 4 3 . .
. . 3 . 9 . . 1 .
. . . . 8 . . . 6
3 . . . . 6 . 8 .
. . 7 . . . 5 . .
. 4 . 2 . . . . 9
8 . . . 6 . . . .
. 6 . . 5 . 7 . .
. . 9 3 . . . . 2

I changed some more clues. Out came the following.
Code: Select all
5 . . . . 4 3 . .
. . 3 . 9 . . 1 .
. . . . 8 . . . 6
1 . . . . . . 8 .
. . 7 . 2 . 5 . .
. 4 . . . . . . 9
8 . . . 6 . . . .
. 6 . . 5 . 7 . .
. . 9 3 . . . . 2

an 90° rotational symmetry
