Claudia,

That Cartier is hard, I still haven't got a thing but I am only starting on it still.

Your latest jewellery is easier. Here are two versions, strictly to design:

Code: Select all
 #claje1 minimal SE=8.3 (GC02).

  . 3 . 2 . 7 . 8 .
  4 . . . . . . . 3
  . 8 . . 9 . . 2 .
  . . 6 . . . 9 . .
  . . . 1 . 8 . . .
  . . . . 7 . . . .
  . . . 8 . 5 . . .
  . . 5 . . . 6 . .
  . 9 . 3 . 2 . 1 .

Code: Select all
#claje2 untouchable easy jade oyster (GC03).

  . 3 . 2 . 6 . 1 .
  7 . . . . . . . 5
  . 8 . . 9 . . 2 .
  . . 6 . . . 9 . .
  . . . 1 . 8 . . .
  . . . . 7 . . . .
  . . . 7 . 1 . . .
  . . 4 . . . 6 . .
  . 5 . 3 . 2 . 7 .

Thanks, Claudia.
Yes, the timing was right...
The rating (8.4) you mentionned was related to my previous puzzle.
This one is a pure singles.

Thanks, Mike.

Here’s an other 19 clues, with diagonal symmetry.
Code: Select all
 1 . . | . . 2 | . . 3
 . 4 . | . 5 . | . . .
 . . 6 | . . . | 7 . .
-------+-------+-------
 . . . | 6 . . | . . .
 . 5 . | . 8 . | . 9 .
 7 . . | . . 3 | . . .
-------+-------+-------
 . . 3 | . . . | 2 . .
 . . . | . 9 . | . 4 .
 2 . . | . . . | . . 9

Nice. This one has one symmetry-breaking cell. Let's just say it's warding off the evil eye. (Note: this is not an X-sudoku.)

Code: Select all
  1  .  .  5  .  8  .  .  .
  .  2  .  .  .  .  .  .  1
  .  .  3  .  .  1  8  .  .
  .  .  .  4  .  3  .  2  .
  .  .  .  .  5  .  .  .  .
  .  4  .  2  .  6  .  9  .
  .  .  2  9  .  .  7  .  .
  6  .  .  .  .  .  .  8  .
  .  .  .  6  .  5  .  .  9

SE 8.4.

Two more cells can go, but it stays at SE 6.7:
Code: Select all
  .  .  .  7  .  .  .  .  4
  9  .  .  .  .  3  .  .  .
  .  .  .  .  8  .  5  .  .

  .  .  4  .  5  .  .  .  .
  .  .  .  8  .  .  .  .  3
  1  .  .  .  .  2  .  9  .

So we have a puzzle with some clues missing but a lower SE-rating?

Would be interested to see the solving logs of those 2 puzzles...:?:

There's more than just two clues missing. Some of the clues have been changed. This changes the nature of the puzzle completely.

Thanks daj for the explanation, didn't look at the grids carefully...

But I once saw a puzzle becoming harder to solve when a clue is added (edited), because it takes away a potential UR... Sadly I couldn't retrieve the original thread...:(

I guess that was intended the other way around, making a puzzle harder by adding a number.

Thanks RW for correcting my mistake, and lead me to the thread...:)

Had a 2nd look thru it, and the discussion still appears interesting to me...

Some X's

Postby Mauricio » Tue Dec 12, 2006 7:36 pm

Two simple patterns:

Code: Select all
......1..
.1.2.3.4.
9...6...5
.8.....2.
..1...3..
.6.....9.
7...4...9
.3.8.9.1.
..9...5..

Code: Select all
..2...8..
.1.2.3.4.
8...9...7
.8.....2.
..4...5..
.7.....6.
1...2...5
.4.1.7.9.
..9...6..

Code: Select all
.6.....2.
1.....3.4
.5.4.9.6.
..5.4.2..
...5.3...
..1.2.8..
.1.3.4.7.
7.3...4.6
.2.....5.

Code: Select all
.6.....2.
1.....3.4
.3...5.8.
..8.6.7..
...7.2...
..3.8.2..
.5.8.9.4.
4.1.....5
.......7.

They are minimal, but you can add clues to see the X pattern.

Exactly. And that's why I wrote 'cells' and not 'clues'. To illustrate your point further, this pearl, that starts at SE 6. 7 and goes up to 8.5:
Code: Select all
  3        8
     8        6        4
        9        7        3
  7        4        3
              9
        6        5        2
  8        2        7
     4        5        9
        5        8

plummets to about 1.5 when one cell is removed and three others have their values altered:
Code: Select all
  3  .  .  9  .  .  .  .  .
  .  8  .  .  6  .  .  4  .
  .  .  1  .  .  7  .  .  3
  7  .  .  .  .  .  3  .  .
  .  .  .  .  9  .  .  .  .
  .  .  6  .  .  5  .  .  2
  8  .  .  2  .  .  7  .  .
  .  4  .  .  5  .  .  9  .
  .  .  5  .  .  4  .  .  .
