JPF, thanks for the puzzles. As you know getting the SE ratings is quite time consuming. When you're doing it, would you consider somehow including that info in your future posts? TIA, Ron

please note that i am preparing go to Italy for 6 weeks work. I will check all the puzzles (and followers), but it might last a week to find the opportunity for it.

I was very curious about the first with ER 9.9. It needed 14 BF steps (only found in 2 of 6 runs), so it will become number 5 in my list.

I also checked the ER 9.9 puzzle of JPF's new list, but it did not qualify (!), this is a 7 step solution:

9% of admitted puzzles seems to me not too bad.
The next list (E) doesn't look as successful ... up too now.

I have a hard time to select the generated puzzles to expect a good RMS rating.
For example I was surprised to see the RMS's rating for 2 puzzles :

Since i dont have my traces here, i cannot analyze my programs solutions for the two puzzles now. But i had a look at the 7 steps for the first (ER 9.9) puzzle of the last list in SE (with ER step ratings):

r3c5<>7: 10.5 (i counted only 21 cells, that are not involved here)
2 singles
r2c3<>8: 9.9
r6c8<>4: 10.0

r6c4<>4: 9.9

r6c9<>8: 9.5

r1c3<>8: 9.3

We can see, that all steps are very hard. Therefore it probably should be rated harder than the ER 9.2 puzzle, which needed 9 steps, when the single steps there are easier. Thats the problem with my rating - it does not consider the hardness of the single steps (one reason is, that it is too elaborate for me to optimize them).

On the other side, when you look at the SE solution, you will see, that most of the steps are redundant (and an experienced solver would not even try them, because she does not see any advantage of these eliminations). And a puzzle, that can be solved with a single 10.0 step is not extremely hard. So IMO neither the ER nor the number of chains of the SE solutions are really very good ratings either.

We also saw, that puzzles with high gsfr or suexrat ratings can have relatively short solutions.

So i see my rating far from beeing optimal, but a good one to filter out very hard, but not ultrahard puzzles. And other ratings often dont say much about how my rating will be. Its the only one, that tries to minimize the overall number of (single) hard steps needed for the solution.

Our good connections to Finland made it possible that i was able to see another exraordinary puzzle, published in a local newspaper there. It is the first puzzle, that neither could be solved by SE nor by my program. gsf's program needed other than the default settings (adding coloring) to give a rating.
Since it was already published i hope, the author, ArtoI, is not offended to see it here:

Using SimpleSudoku i saw 3 possible eliminations (using coloring and xy-wing), which help SE and my program to find a solution: r2c7<>4, r3c8<>3, r6c9<>3

The last one is enough for SE to continue, it gives a rating of 10.0 then.

The following eliminations then give a 3 in r6c8.
r2c7<>4, r3c8<>3, r6c9<>3, r6c8<>7, r6c8<>8, r5c1<>7, r5c8<>3.

The rest (ER 9.4) is routine for my program, which solves it in 9 steps. e.g.
r4c8<>4, r4c2<>8, r6c7<>8, r5c1<>7, r3c8<>4, r7c4<>7, r6c2<>9, r1c3<>4, r1c2<>5

Since my program cannot rate it, i will put it on top of my list, when i am through with JPF's puzzles.
As RW had announced, it is time for me to improve my program (to give comparable ratings also for those giant puzzles), but i will not have the time for it this year (and maybe then another public rating is available, that is better also from my point of view).

I knew it,

The puzzle above follows the pattern which I submitted my top puzzle (The fluid drive)....... it is basically a diagonal pattern with an empty box. I was hoping that someone would genrate some more as I knew that pattern would harbour more difficult puzzles:D , having said that, ArtoI's puzzle could have a face-lift to give it a more aesthetic look.

otherwise, a truly AMAZING puzzle.......What is the status of backdoors for this one ???
