In general, I note that we are beginning to suffer from a dearth of new patterns.

P.S. I was surprised that the 11.8 was found quite so fast; on my 2GHz machine it takes five hours to rate it with SE, and gsf found it on that time-scale.

Hi mike,

I think there are still plenty of possible patterns in the 23 24 clues area, but with the symmetry constraint, most of them have a ceiling rating relatively low.

regarding the time, I am rating on a 64 bits computer which is faster

the 11.8 se rating took 44 min on my 8x3.4Ghz desktop

I have a vague recollection that rating this puzzle all those years ago took 2.5 hours at 1.6GHz. Does anyone have any idea why it should take so much time now, at 2GHz?
