Here is a minimal 21. We already have the analog pattern for 20 clues though, in one of ab's puzzles.

here's a minimal 21 for which we don't have the 20:

I think Nikoli, who make puzzles for the Guardian, must keep half an eye on this forum. The Guardian's latest puzzle is a full symmetry minimal 24:

Supplementaray list: 19 minimal 24s.

Postby Ocean » Sun Apr 30, 2006 3:58 am

Supplementary list of minimal 24s with full symmetry: Nineteen puzzles with different non-isomorphic patterns. All patterns differ from the 32 non-isomorphic patterns in minimal 24s found previously in this thread (gsf's list and a few others) - provided no doublecount or oversight. Which gives us a total of 51 patterns so far, but have not checked systematically elsewhere in the forum.

Here is a minimal 21 for which we have the 20 (ab) :

Code: Select all
[M21   17-2-4-0-1]

 . . . | 4 . 9 | . . .

 . . 5 | . . . | 3 . .
 . . . | 1 . 6 | . . .
 9 . . | . 2 . | . . 8

I think we should use this (Ocean's) presentation.

we do have the 20 for that puzzle!

I found a minimal 20 for that and this one too, which we also have a 20 for:
Code: Select all

Yes, sorry, I realized that after my post et just before yours.
I have modified my comment.
It's not easy not to make a mistake with all these equivalent puzzles.

It would be nice if you could give the code(s) of your puzzle and use dots to represent the spaces ...:)

Thanks.

Here is a list of all the different patterns of F.S. puzzles with 20 and 21 clues.
I suggest to use the FS code (the lowest number) to name a pattern, adding 0 for 20 clues and 1 for 21 clues.

I will update the list of the posted 20-21 puzzles in this format as soon as possible.

are you sure that this pattern is impossible ?

Code: Select all

Add -0 or -1 for the full code of the pattern.
* for a non minimal solution.

my initial criterion for posting impossible puzzles was two empty lines in a band. That puzzle does not meet that, so I'm not sure that it's impossible. I do think it a very unlikely candidate, but that's just an opinion.

For anyone still searching for 20s I keep getting pseudo puzzles for 0-2-5-1-0 so that might be a good candidate. I reckon 0-2-5-2-0 is the next best bet and 1-4-4-1-0 is an outside chance. good luck!
