Call for AGM : Forum viability

Postby coloin » Fri Jul 08, 2022 12:02 am

If this forum were to disappear all this work would probably be lost ...... or be fragmented.
This would be a such a loss.

Agenda

Ann & John White are the new owners.
See posts following this one or posts in the Patterns Game following this one.
Some contacts by Mike or myself.
No real answer.

I agree 100%.

How many of us actually rely on this forum to document our research results? I certainly do.

I made a suggestion many moons ago about how to preserve such knowledge for posterity. Whether the publisher remains interested remains to be seen.

Hi Mike,
Writing a book about Sudoku is one thing; preserving this forum is a very different one. I don't think all the interesting topics in this forum could make it into a book.
But the publisher you've been in touch with might be interested in hosting this forum - maybe on the condition that some book be written and published by them. Instead of a book, one might also consider a journal, more apt to exposing different views.
In any case, I anticipate the same kind of problems: the number of people on this forum able to write an article, let alone a book, is probably very low compared to the sum of what has been published (not even counting all that has been lost in the big crash).

Yes we all do

Questions -

How much hosting space does this forum use ?
Should we have a back-up hosting page where we can at least communicate?

Perhaps JasonLion can comment ... I guess he might be ill

If you have a working local copy of this, you will have a good idea. With info from the Board Index page, extrapolate to make good guess.

I'm new to Sudoku and new to this forum. This forum is a fantastic resource and it would be greatly missed.

Is there a chance of it going away? Has there been an announced event/shutdown?

I see 'Sponsored by Enjoy Sudoku' in the header but no info about 'Enjoy Sudoku' - if this is a free site sponsored by them, I'm curious why they don't provide more ways to 'see' them.

The world does seem to be moving away from purpose-built 'forums' like this one, towards either 'generic' platforms like Reddit, or even more generic platforms like Farcebook, which is a trend I don't enjoy at all.

In 2015 another (older) Sudoku forum (that still exists, remaining active at least in the puzzle section) was having the same concerns that we have now. See the link below.

http://www.dailysudoku.com/sudoku/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7807&sid=5040b7f372b235f20178a2d49958db98

It would be very helpful if we had an "emergency link" to go in case this forum goes away. Of course this does not solve our current (big) problem, but it seems to be a first (very basic) step.

More and more seems to get malfunctioning.
What first is needed is a "regroup area".
We can still state our worries at this forum. But when that gets lost...
Another forum, a whatsapp group, or some Facebook or Google group?
How to communicate?

i proposed Tlgrm because it allows me to keep my telephone-number hidden!

Hi 1to9only
I don't see how sending an email to a private account (yours) can preserve the working of this forum.
It seems to me that creating a google group would be a much more open solution: anyone can create topics and post in the group.

I've done it.
The group is sudoku-knowledge.
The declared purpose is:
The purpose of this group is to preserve and develop knowledge about sudoku, in particular all that has been posted on sudoku forums that may disappear without any warning.
It is also to maintain contact between members of the sudoku community that has formed along the years via the forums.

Registration and viewing of the content is open to anyone (like this forum) and posting is open to any registered member.

I don't consider it as a substitute to this forum, which should remain our place of discussion as long as it works, but as a means of keeping in touch in case it disappears.
