I'll split the quote into two.

I never cross my i's, I dot them.

But don't half tell on me.

Both quotes can be solved independently with each quote giving reinforcement to the other.

It's one word; A noun.

Clue: When I is big I don't need it.

Ruud, you're on the right lines, or should I say, points.

You could say, I is pointless.

I know ‘item’ looked silly but here’s how my brain worked.

item = a dotted i + a crossed t + me (I)
item = I never cross my i's, I dot them.
item = i + te (half tell) + em (me) = half tell on me

I thought I was on to something, but obviously not, so scrub that.

Are you a telescope? (Let me know if you want me to explain it.):D

That is what I was thinking about........

Scope = Spy = Half-tell

Half tell = tel

Half tell on me(scope) = telescope.......

never cross my i's........ imagine crossing the eye-pieces of a scope

DON'T Half tell on me..........:?::( does that mean it is a MICROscope & not a TELEscope

When I is big I don't need it. = That goes with telescope & microscope....

as emm went with telescope, I'll go with microscope.......

I never cross my i's, I dot them.

3 objects involved here, the I's, the dots, and whatever places the dots.

The I's are given as a clue.
The point/dot was on the right track.
An object that could place a point could be called a 'pointer'.

But don't half tell on me.

I could not find the meaning of half tell. Thanks Tarek, for 'pointing' that out.
However, 'tell on' = inform against, also 'point out'. It is a fair request to a pointer not to point 'me' out.
Since a pointer is also a kind of hunting dog, what would you say to it if you were the game. Nudge nudge...

When I is big I don't need it.

An upper case 'I' does not need a 'pointer' to dot it.

You could say, I is pointless.

Indeed, here is the upper case 'I' without a point/dot

So my next guess is pointer

I thought this riddle would be too easy but it looks like I was wrong.

Let's just say that ruud, with point, is both right and wrong.

Tell on Look at synonyms.

or What?

No to: iPOD, Infinity, Pointer, Telescope, Microscope.

Ok, that brings us to:

Mark = denounce = tell at
Mark = dot

Are you a mark?

if we are looking for synonyms: I'll pick Speck. as it results in an artifact when on the microscope's i's:D

However, on a serious note..... The answer maybe an Apostrophe.

we always use an apostrophe after a small letter to remove confusion (as in your i's), however with a capital letter, there exists no confusion if I'm not wrong (as in your Is).

Don't... has an apostrophe and Don't literally half tells on me(me, being the apostrophe)........

It also links well with the first riddle too. a pause trophy

whatever the correct answer is, I still favour the iPOD:D

if all is still not correct my next guess would be a RAT (Although not the answer MCC intended, but still it works).....

look at the following image from this site:www.wtmelon.com/a27Dottingi's.html, which illustrates 49 ways to cross t's & dot i's
Imagelook closely at r6c2, that is a RAT dotting that i, solving the riddle:D
