some may have noticed a few ephemeral dup-puzzle-tie messages on this page in the past day
I finally caught the referee in the act and can now describe what happened

the referee keeps track of new posts by polling the forum every 5 minutes
and checking for a page after the last topic page determined by the previous poll

the html response for going past the last page changed from the old forum
e.g., the current last page url is forum.enjoysudoku.com/patterns-game-t6290-7830.html
so the check for the page after that would use forum.enjoysudoku.com/patterns-game-t6290-7845.html (15 posts per page)
the current forum implementation will return 7830 when 7845 does not exist
but that html image could and probably will be different from the refere's cached version
ruling out a simple comparison to do the check
the current forum does put this tag in the html that can be used to confirm a new last page

the referee now checks for this

what caused the invalid dup-puzzle-tie messages was a flawed test for last page
which sometimes allowed two or more copies of the last page to be entered into the referee's cache
(sometimes happened when the cached and just fetched html images differed, probably in #posts by a user,
or embedded sids or other hidden form codes not caught by the preprocessing done before the comparison)

hopefully the patched check will avoid this problem
but we may not get a real test of that until the next game

at some point I'll start a thread that explains the referee details
enough so that other games could be started
its a very interesting programming problem
