the hints and missing puzzle list helped track the problem down
incomplete html page snapshots corrupted g.r.emlin's page cache
the corruption happened in the last page of the cache
I added a check to make sure the size has increased from the last time before replacing the last page in the cache
the corruption probably has to do with http and/or wget timeouts
and probably coincides with the intermittent browser delays champagne saw
(g.r.emlin uses wget(1) to communicate with the forum)
