It does not seem logical to me that the foreseen winner of this game uses questionable tricks.

In retrospect, if m_b_metcalf had not mentioned 77 I probably would not have posted the 4.8 and 6.0.
Now if a 6.1 or 5.4 or 5.3 or 11.4 turns up, I'll probably post it for a record equalling 80.
As to whatever happened to those consecutive entries penalties, you'll have to ask g.r.emlin about that.

It is a valid tactic to play. Is it a valid tactic to play? The rules do not expressly forbid it.

Does anyone happen to know the highest number of final ratings achieved in a game (without 'more')?

Mike, i posted a bunch of patterns game statistics here - thought you might enjoy looking through those. in that post i confirm that 80 is the record, from #284 and #298, as 1to9only said

I also admire 1to9only and also JPF and m_b_metcalf for their knowledge and programming skills.
In this game #443 I have found 15000 solutions, but only 16 are present in the played rating list of the highest 78 submissions. The rest is worse
In the previous game more than 100,000 solutions.

I dont think g.r.emlin has really reflected too deeply on the way the rules could be taken advantage of ... certainly the last entry is rightly weighted heavily.
However close the status was In this instance I don't think winning was utmost in the mind of 1to9only and that he wanted to register the rare ratings for this game before it closed and I guess if JPF had played one of them 1to9only could easily have played the other.... but I do understand why JPF should feel aggrieved as he was denied the chance to play [both !] those rare ratings if he had found them ...
Gnerating and rating more than 10M puzzles [ ? or more] for each pattern certainly is not for the faint hearted !!!!

g.r.emlin has other known bugs that are actively exploited during the games!!!

We dont know if anyone else found a 4.8 or a 6.0, if you did not find one there is no reason to feel aggrieved, if you have then my apologies for spoiling your game.

The game was going nowhere after the 4.9, submitting the 4.8 and 6.0 was to increase the final ratings count from 77, I was expecting a decrease in score (twice) from 2 consecutive entries ajustments (just that g.r.emlin got sickened!), and JPF could probably have won the game then if there existed an 11.4.

I also point that I did not cause g.r.emlin's current foibles, as g.r.emlin responded to a ::: status ::: request AFTER I had posted the 4.8 and 6.0.

These numbers are low. For low clues puzzles in the Patterns Game, the number of valid puzzles number in the millions, the more clues the more millions.

There are a few patterns game, where the number of valid puzzles is low (around a 100) which can be used to test puzzles generation:

- game 169, Patterns Game: here, Discussion from: here, the 112 puzzles ordered by minlex: here. I have used this grid for testing before.

- game 381, Patterns Game: here, this has 102 valid puzzles. This game produced the highest-rated for a 19-clues puzzle in the Patterns Game. You should be able (try) to find/generate all 102 puzzles.
