anyway i never did figure out how to find "diamonds" for the Patterns Game. generating thousands of puzzles, some "diamonds" may just show up---

... most of the thousands are instantly rejected because thay start with singles, etc.

am i missing something?

just possibly you meant to imply:

11.4/1.2/1.2 is never the highest rating

if there is a 11.4/1.2/1.2
then there is also a "better" 11.4
(one not starting with a "hidden single")

Hi Pat,
Mike will surely answer on it's side, but let me comment on that

1) The topic was the filter for diamonds.

In such a search, all puzzles starting with an ED 1.2 can be cleared, which is already a significant part of the load.
Moreover, any puzzle where the EP is passed in the rating can be rejected as well.
At the end, puzzles eligible to the diamond rating are not so frequent.

2) Finding the highest rating is another topic.

Some players, to optimise the search with a limited power, accept the risk of missing a highest rating with an ED 1.2.
This is an acceptable strategy if you look at the past results.

Sometimes, it is a loosing strategy.
