I had thought of looking back for a 17C with the string of 9 clues as you have used ! But I failed to complete ...

A (vanilla Sudoku) program shows me that with a Kraken <8> or an almost hidden <89> pair in C8, and I can eliminate 1234567r4c8, and 9r6c6, but that doesn't seem to help.

This one [I thought like most 17C] would have an easy path ... apart from the end step.

Except you have overlooked the ^ hint [ as I did initially too]

but r3c7 cant be a 7 - therefore it has only one solution [colouring I believe]

I've only seen the two 17's, and yeah, that's how they came out.

Did you make them from known 17C puzzles or de novo ?

Made them by whittling down "<>>>><<>…" (144 clue) puzzles from random grids, to get a minimal puzzle, and then doing {-1,+1} (and later {-2,+2}) on them to try to get smaller sizes.

Deja vu, yes. I'm using a SAT solver, though … so the process is pretty slow, compared to the old days.

Yes. The '<' can be either between adjacent cells in the UA, or connecting it to a cell outside the UA.
When it's a 2-digit UA for adjacent digits, though, an internal '<' is needed.
So, for example, a grid containg something like this, can't have a valid puzzle:
