OK, I take your word for it. The truth is that SE doesn't work at all on my computer, so I had to work it out by hand, rather unsure of exactly what "Direct Pointing" meant.

(I downloaded the .zip, extracted the files, tried to open it and I got a message that says:

Java Virtual Machine Launcher

Could not find the main class. Program will exit.

What am I to do?)

You can launch it directly as a JAVA applet from the site itself.

If you want todownload it, the donload & run the package which has the JAR file

But trying to open the .jar gives exactly the same infuriating message as the .zip and trying to open it as a Java applet gives a message in the launch area saying "The application has been launched (You may need to wait a few seconds) " and a message at the bottom of the screen saying

"load: class diuf.sudoku.applet.SudokuApplet not found"

and absolutely nothing loads.
