Where am I (3)?

Anything goes, but keep it seemly...

Where am I (3)?

Postby underquark » Fri Jun 23, 2006 12:02 am

I was brought up in these parts. All clues relate to people or places in a particular area of land demarcated by defined political boundaries. Answers for each question and for the whole, please.

1] One of the signatories of the US Declaration of independence came from here.

2] A happy Scotsman can be found here.

3] The Scotsman was made happy by a naked woman being nearby.

4] There is a Caucasian House of God here.

5] There is an erstwhile dwelling abode here.

6] a)A famous battle was fought near b)a town that used to produce up to 900 bushels of salt per week.

Just like with the gallon, a US bushel is a little smaller than an Imperial (British) bushel. 1 U.S. bushel = 35.23907 liters = 9.30917793 U.S. gallons; 1 Imperial bushel = 36.36872 litres = 8 Imperial gallons. Bushels, however, have nothing to do with the answers. Have fun with Wikipedia on Q1, by the way, since there were 56 signatories!

15 hours and only one answer:?: OK MCC, you've got 6a and 6b - well done. The rest should yield to either local knowledge or to frantic Wikipediaing.

Hi underquark,
Without local knowledge this one's tough even when I looked at "Declaration of Indepence" in Wikipedia. Also, I'm still recovering from "What am I (16)":) and suspect others could also be having a "breather" or watching the soccer or etc. Perhaps "Mr Hinter" needs to start making some phone calls??

UQ, in the interest of saving time, I'm posting the first signer I've encountered who came from your part of the world:

Is #1, Button Gwinnett who was born in:
Gloucestershire, England?

No.

6b) is located in what was a county from 1921 to 1975 but is now classed as a council district of the same name. Looking for name of that council district and then the place names which are quite punny.

It was East Lothian. A former county of east central Scotland. It became a district of Lothian region in 1975.

Has this anything to do with colchicums the autumn crocus, otherwise known as naked ladies:?:

East Lothian is the correct area.

Charles Edward Louis John Casimir Silvester Maria Stuart (31/12/1720 - 31/01/1788) was born in Rome and spent most of his childhood in Rome and Bologna. He later moved back to Italy and died there. Buried initially in the Cathdral of Frascati, his remains were later moved to St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. About as Scottish as spaghetti, then.

The crocus is an intriguing slant but not part of the answer in this case.

Except for the person mentioned in Q1, the rest are placenames.

How about - Aberlady:?:

I'm stuck on the other two at the moment.

Good going so far MCC. Mac was, indeed, merry because he saw a bare lady. The good Dr John Witherspoon was born in East Lothian and was the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence, having emigrated to New Jersey at the ripe old age of 45. Now he was Scottish, to the extent of being anti-British crown and that's how he ended up becoming an American revolutionary. Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde etc.) is his great, great, great etc. grand-daughter.

That just leaves 4] and 5] which are rather lame puns on place-names in that county.

underquark wrote:4] There is a Caucasian House of God here.

Causcasian = White, and
House of God = Church = Kirk, therefore
It's Whitekirk.

underquark wrote:5] There is an erstwhile dwelling abode here.

Erstwhile = former/previous = Auld (scotish = old)
Home = Hame, therefore
It's Auldhame.

Ok, one for you underquark - Annie's adoration.

Well done MCC. By way of interest, how do you get "Kirk" from "Church" ?

Kirk comes from the Scottish or N.English for church.
