Could be too easy to some...

Is it the world sushi and sashimi league table? Japan is definitely number 1 for this; I'd say Oz/NZ are close for 2nd and 3rd, Denmark gets 4th because they like nice fresh raw fish in Denmark (but they have to import the rice);l then we have California (almost a country in its own right), Spain and Norway. Sushi in England largely suks so they get 8th place.

England get (as high as) 8th in sushi/sashimi? Don't think so... Perhaps in fish 'n chips...:D

JPF, nothing to do with vowels, consonants or any lexicology/etymology/phonology/morphology etc...

Does this have anything to do with geographical location:?:

Not really...

Looks like the usual suspects don't have any previous knowledge about this... Good...:D

For sure England is disqualified for every food league. And in Asia there must be at least China, India, Armenia, Sri Lanka, Iraque, Turkey and asian part of Russia in the first league and not Japan. May be that Japan leads in the Fast food league with there sushi because it is more beautiful for the eyes then Hamburgers of the US team. (Sushi is better for the eyes, Hamburges smells better then a Sushi bar). But who eats fast food. ;-)

Nice discussions about food competitions... But this riddle has nothing to do with food...

Riddler wrote:And France is upside down.

You have to take this into account...

I must stress that this riddle has nothing to do with Zinedine Zidane or the French football/soccer team or the World Cup tournament either...

Are you a sailor on an boat in the North Sea at about 7°E, 57°N? To your left is England (at 8 o'clock), to your right Denmark (4 o'clock) and Japan is over the globe just a bit right of dead ahead at the 1 o'clock position. France is, of course, upside down as you have rested your coffee cup on the back of the chart.

Are you a deep (and rather hot) miner at the barycentre of the Earth/Moon orbit (a point about 1700Km below the surface of the Earth) with similar clock positions to those mentioned above? France is upside-down as you are looking at it from below.

But hey - it's a what not a who.

Knowing udosuk's penchant for sporting events, I'll go with the World Lacrosse championship that began in Ontario yesterday.

Are you a Japanese / Australian by any chance, udosuk?

This is the closest attempt from anybody so far... But still not the "exact answer"... (Perhaps underquark already knew the exact answer, just like to muck around a little bit more?)

This is also fairly close to the real situation but not exactly...:)

The riddle is not about Lacross, nor any other sport... Didn't know Japan is a world leading Lacrosse nation though...

[Edit: I'll edit the original post when I misquote somebody's username...]

Just so it gets clearer, here are some wikipedia/wiktionary pages:

under
quark
quack
udo
suk
uso
duk
duke
duck
suck

Apparently Udo Suk is a possible European personal name...
