What am I (3a)

Anything goes, but keep it seemly...

No. In fact, when either I or you were traveling at the speed of sound, the sound effect that you need to know to solve this riddle would not occur.

Oops, that was another clue...

The "border" is not the sound barrier, so your answers are not correct.

Resonance can explain why you would hear things just as you cross the "border",the border would be the vibrational frequency.

No, no, no.

Imagine the following:

You are standing at the side of the road. You see me driving towards you on my motorbike. Now close your eyes. Concentrate on hearing... What happens to the sound of my motorbike at the exact moment I cross you:?:

That depends on the make & speed of the motorbike & what your definition of crossing a person is:D

it would be one of 2 results:

1. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh Bang.
2. Bang aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh.

Something to think upon - Does a successful hitchhiker never hear the 'Doppler effect'?

You obviously need more hints!:D

This is the long version:

I am a single word of 4 syllables.

When you see me in the dictionary, I am usually described with 2 shorter words.

The first is a single syllable word that represents an aspect of sound that changes as a result of the Doppler effect.

The second is a 2 syllable word that is a synonym for the word 'border'.

When you have found me, notice that I also contain 2 words that explain where I'm going when crossing the border.

What am I:?:

This could be either 'Tone' or 'Pitch'.

Ah,,,,

Then how about Intonation, if it is the correct answer, then credit has to go to MCC for the word "pitch", that was a huge clue Ruud...:D ,

the other 2 syllable word would then be Contour (I think),
Intonation=Pitch Contour

On the side I'll tell you why I thought of "Hat" or "Cap".....
I heard you Cross=Zenith or Peak of the sound wave (I think)....
The border=Brim
Peak + Brim = Cap:D

On another note..... Zenith Verge would have taken this thread to the TWILIGHT ZONE:)

Suppose intonation is the answer... Does it mean Ruud is going to Chicago (for a certain festival) and I suppose he lives in Canada, around the Toronto area ("crossing the border")?

If not, "into nation"... Which nation?

All those hints... and Ruud assumed we could solve with that:
Ruud wrote:I heard you cross the border

I think you have seriously over-estimated the intelligence of general mankind...:D

Correctamundo, Tarek!

Intonation=Pitch Contour

Spot on.

Udosuk wrote:If not, "into nation"... Which nation?

Any nation. To travel into a nation, you have to cross its border. Even if that nation is a big chunk of desert completely surrounded by water.

Udosuk wrote:I think you have seriously over-estimated the intelligence of general mankind...

After the first few answers I knew I had to give you additional clues. To associate "I heard you cross" with the word "pitch" you not only have to think outside the box, but you have to think outside an entire chute.

Tarek wrote:that was a huge clue Ruud

Yep. I could have saved that last sentence for another hint.

Anyway, this was just to give MCC some time to conjure up a new brain teaser.
