What am I? (28)

Anything goes, but keep it seemly...

As underquark has deduced the riddle is about chess.

My response of c5 d7 to his e4 c5 was to indicate a knight's move on an open board, no other pieces, and to let him know that he was on the right lines, that's if, indeed, he was talking about chess and not something else.

His reply about "Fairies and fu-aad" confirmed he knew it was about chess, that's after I'd looked them up.

Riddle:
Curse that Sicilian, he has forced me to change my position, a move most disadvantageous to me.

"Sicilian" a clue to indicate "Sicilian defence" a term used in chess.

But underquark has not resolved the riddle yet.

I'm not white or black, nor am I a chess piece.

Are you an opponent of the Sicilian chess player Pietro Carrera (1573-1647, Sicily), possibly Gioacchino Greco (1600-c1634, Italy) who described the "Sicilian Defence" but never named his opponent (only alluding to him/her as "NN")?

This is not a person.

As MCC has already stated above, the riddle is about chess but the answer is not a chess piece or a person. The only answer I can think of is a chess 'move' and emm's answer "checkmate" seems the most likely.

It's not a computer.

emm's "checkmate" is thinking along the right lines.

Cec's "chess move" or chess term is correct thinking.

This is especially for emm to keep her vowels rownded:D
"How now brown cow", or

Another chess move guess:

Castling?

Is "Sicilian Defense" an important concept here, or just a tool to direct us into the right theme (chess)?

No.

It is not important, it was just a guide to the right path, i.e. chess.

Reread the riddle.

There's a lot of "a's" there so how about "Stalemate"

Checkmate is not correct because once a player is checkmated he/she loses immediately...

To force a player to "change the position" (i.e. move/cover the king) we merely need to check him/her... So is the answer check or checking?

But I think it's too simple an answer...

It's not "stalmate".
