I'm a newcomer to this forum and this amazing thread - apologies if I should have been able to find the answer to this question. Is there a version of the ph_2010 database in which the puzzles are given with candidates included? I'm developing my own solver and I'd like to be able to start a puzzle at a place where the easiest next elimination has a specific (estimated) difficulty.

Edit : mistake in list

(I used gridchecker --similar --removeredundant to calculate minimals, I had an interesting list but turns out they are not minimal - so much for gridchecker. I returned to my own minimal algorithm and that is really slow for larger amounts of removable clues. I suppose there is no alternative to that time consuming process, or does anyone know of software that can perform this task?)

what you need is a solver that can output the pm at each step of the solving path, like for example Andrew Stuart solver: import a puzzle, then 'solve path' and you can load the pm before each technique used in the path.
however the ph_2010 database may not be the most suitable collection of puzzles to use when developing a solver, their SE rating ranging from 11.0 to 11.9 they need quite sophisticated techniques to solve.

It has BxB = 7 and is therefore the 4th one with so high BxB and without a tridagon.

Alas …. I think it is one of the 3 known .

Regarding gridchecker … please post the non minimal puzzle which Dobrichev’s program fails to minimise !

I use gsf's program, with command line:

Generate all the minimal puzzles for the puzzles in file “puzzles.txt”, put them in solution-minlex format [the %#.c part], with dots for empty cells [the | sed s/0/./g part], making sure that:
1) they are not in T&E(0) [the M>0 part];
2) no two isomorphic puzzles will appear [the uniq() part];
and store the results in file “minimals.txt”.

Coloin, I have to correct my remark, the result of gridchecker is minimal, I got problems with a larger number of removable clues but I think that is a problem for any program. Gridchecker repeats minimals in the answers, showing the same solution multiple times.

Many thanks for the replies. My solver can already do all 100 of the "unsolvables" available at Andrew Stuart's site, as well as Escargot, so I think I'm ready for ph_2010, but for sure I'm starting at the bottom with the 10.3 cases.

One more question about ph_2010: to what extent (or, by what definition) are the puzzles essentially distinct? I'm a little surprised that some are in maxlex, some in minlex and some in "top row is 123456789" (what is the name for that format?) - but more materially, does every puzzle have an essentially distinct state at its hardest elimination (which I presume is the one that gives rise to its SER)?

And finally, what is the meaning of the asterisk at the end of some lines? The readme doesn't seem to answer this.

Unfortunately, apart from the 11.9s that I found , on the back of following comments from denis and eleven about the value oF SE in these trigadon puzzles .. and in partiular SE 11.8, I didnt think publishing more puzzles contributed much.

I analysed both the minlex puzzles and the minlex solution grid puzzles , and the 11.8 concordance with their respective SE was around 60 %.
The new 11.8 puzzles that I identified were not doubly concordant, and some new twin puzzles quite often were downgraded to 11.7 in one or both morphs...... despite having the same pencil mark status.

On one occaision an 11.8 of hendrik's [may 5th 2024] was upgraded to an 11.9 when rated as the minlexgrid puzzle, but again all the twin puzzles of this were only 11.8. [edit ! this is a mistake]

In any case I have to agree with eleven, in that a puzzle which has the Tridagon , has its difficulty downgraded by using the technique, which SE and BxB dont account for.
However there seems to be a gap in the 11.8s in terms of number of clues.
There remains the possibility that a puzzle could be found [ but not easily] which has 24-25 clues and has the tridagon but not initially completable with singles.
eg this sort of puzzle construction

Some puzzles, all rated 11.8/1.2/1.2 in solution minlex. I am yet doing a check if there are any T&E(3) or higher BxB there but I think not, those will be published separate.
