the rules of the game are in page one of that thread.

any agreed change of the rules must be shown in that first post.

and gremlin should be aware of these new agreed rules.

I'll on my side ignore any attempt to change unofficially the rules.

In that specific case, I also find quite counter productive the suggestion made by ronk.

champagne, in order to improve competitive balance in the Patterns Game, I have made three suggestions:

1. The same player cannot be awarded both the last-entry and highest-entry bonuses,
2. The addition of an undefined handicap system, and
3. Prohibiting submissions by a player while that player has the lead.

As I recall, you didn't comment on the 2nd, but you certainly trashed both my 1st and 3rd suggestions. What are your suggestions

I really don't understand what you're trying to achieve with your persistent, snide remarks about one of the players. The rules of the Game are quite clear, and I don't remember anyone complaining, back around games 37 - 39, for instance, when mauricio used to thrash us all. One objective of the game is to find examples of all possible ratings, and that is best achieved by everyone exhausting their caches. I don't know of any competitive sport where winners are supposed to pull their punches (except when parents play against their children!). It's true that champagne's new software has brought him an insuperable advantage, but that was, and is, open for anyone to emulate.

That said, the first of your suggestions has some merit, except for poor g.r.emlin who has to deal with the edge case that a new highest-rating submission is, of course, simultaneously the last one too. If I were, in the current game, unexpectedly to submit a 10.0 rating, I'd certainly feel that I deserved both bonuses!.

If champagne would try my 3rd suggestion, we would see him winning the same games, but the scores would be closer, hopefully incentivizing others to join or remain in the game. And if, after much prodding, someone cannot be persuaded to even try another's suggestion, they become a poster child of obstinance IMO.

We have handicaps in golf and bowling. Football, basketball and soccer teams send in their 'B' team or otherwise "play the bench." ("Parents" and "children" sounds like an analogy to "champagne" and "ronk." I take that as an insult. )

But I am cluttering this thread with my sense of fair play, which apparently no one else shares. I survived without Patterns Game before game 0114 and I'll survive without it after game 0160, so I'll move on to another playground. Who knows, then I might even have a life again.

modulo the entry curve for new players
one player consistently winning is basically a challenge for the rest of us to step up our game
I have 6 or so cpus at my disposal and can't keep up with recent high scorers
some of whom I'm guessing are working from a single pc
I am having some success with a search on one pc but it requires a good seed from entries already played
and I probably get some plays out of that due to possible self-trumps by the original entrant

I sense a need to vent -- maybe went can set up an interactive games thread for that
so we can avoid scaring off new players with social challenges on top of the technical ones

on another note, given the restart problems etc trying to do a holiday shutdown
I'm just going to let g.r.emlin proceed on the normal schedule
