only 20 hours

Postby Pat » Thu Aug 28, 2008 8:41 am

seems that g.r.emlin took the forum time-stamp of the last puzzle ("10:34 GMT")
as the true time (where in fact the forum-clock is already over 4 hours slow),
thus closing the game after idle only 20 hours (rather than 24 hours)

for the next game I'll look into adding a g.r.emlin time sync post just before the idle warning

actually seems to me they're "only" slow 4 hour 17-18 minute
(and not quite the 4 hour 28 minute your time-stamp claims)

well the current referee host is fast by 11m11s
that may not be remedied until after the weekend
[ edit ] or not ...
the unix command line keeps pace with the guis
referee machine clock now in sync with the correct zulu/gmt/utc time
now the referee must factor in the forum 4h18m skew from zulu

clock skew corrections are in place for the next game
the referee status message will now contain the referee relative time of the status post
(the last status post was edited to test the skew code)
this will be compared with the forum time stamp for the status post
so the adjustment will be tuned ~ every 10 entries

background
the referee clock is USA EDT (-0400 -- now kept in sync via ntp)
the default forum post timestamps are presumably GMT - 8 hours (-0800 -- but not set to the correct time)
taking all skews and frames of reference into account
the forum GMT - 8 hour timestamps act as if they are in the -1218 timezone
