Hi ron,

no haven't used a bot

I might if I had a completely automated generate / rate system but at the moment there are so many manual steps

I also find scraping data off web pages quite troublesome. Last time I did that was pulling isobar images off a long range weather forecast site and every time they made certain changes to the page content / layout or file names (some web designers - like us - have to tinker), crash went my program. I gave up in the end...

Perhaps if i had implemented what I need to really compete, I would maybe look at scraping the submitted puzzles from the results page. But even that seems fraught with danger. Last night (+11UTC) either gremlin was snoozing or i am behind a proxy because it was taking up to 15 minutes for the results to refresh...

I use a bot but limit its submission window to < my waking hours
and also add randomized delays between submissions
based on my scoring the last 10 games its not an advantage
strategy is hard to encode
I still don't have the transition of holding onto pearls in the hope of diamonds tuned right
the bot and g.r.emlin are independent
except that it reads g.r.emlin's list of entries for the current game

re: delays this game
g.r.emlin is single threaded and verifies all of the ratings
when high ratings are submitted it will lag
that's probably why one of the early invalid submissions slipped through this game

re: web site scraping is hard in the face of change
the change from the old forum to the new was a challenge for g.r.emlin
but the current phpbb 3 style will probably be stable for years

From the above discussion, I can guess that "bot" is a kind of automated process to submit puzzles. That word is not in my dictionary.

On my side, all side tasks are manual. If I am preparing a batch, I watch manually the web page from time to time. I even don't use the mail signal given in case a message from gremlin gets in.

Anyway, I have absolutely no skill to build such an automaton.

ps: BTW, I feel the process is speeding up. In that game, I have been more or less late several hours for many many submissions, but I have no free time to improve my process while I am working on SE Clone.
