That's not exactly true.
If my dictionary is comprehensive, i.e. equal to the "official scrabble dictionary", then I can ensure you that d = 27. ( I made an exhaustive run)
If not - which is probably the case - then you may have d < 27, d = 27 or d > 27.

Let's do it with numbers. Somebody come up with two 5-digit prime numbers, and ask for a path between them, changing one digit at a time, such that every intermediate 5-digit number is prime.
