A comment by Scott Styris regarding footwork reported on CricInfo led me to the following New Zealand Herald link, an interview with Wayne Gould.

Puzzles in Newspapers

Wow! I had no idea that the newspapers get the puzzle for free. Surely they'd be willing to pay for it. I wonder why it is free?

Slighlty disconcerting to read the number of sudoku puzzles possible placed at "6 x 1021", but I shall generously assume that's an error in transcription to the webpage as opposed to poor mathematics by the author of the page. Also, the puzzles first went to the weekday Times, not the Sunday edition, but that's a minor niggle...

The paper itself did print the figure correctly -- 6 x 10^21
