Times Killer 21NOV.

Postby subodhgupta » Tue Nov 22, 2005 7:28 pm

Hi all,

Could any solve the killer for 21NOV http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,18209-1879145,00.html? I think, there is a mistake in the puzzle. If you look at the top row, you will find that R1C9 has to be a 7. This would make R2C9 = 4.

Also, since R2C1+R2C2= 3, this means that {R2C1,R2C2}={1,2}. But then R2C3+R2C4= 7 which means {R2C1,R2C2} = {{6,1},{5,2},{4,3}} neither of which is possible since we already have 4,3,1 in that that row?

Is what I said above correct or am I missing something?

I think you've not added up the top row correctly - I make it that r1c9 has to be 4!

I solved the puzzle yesterday with no problem. No longer have the paper to hand to give you the solution but hopefully with r1c9=4 thus r2c9=7, you will have a pair of candidates that can fit the 7 cage in row 2.

HI Cathy,

The first row contains 14+9+13+5+11 = 52. Since the total should be 45, R1C9 is (52-45) = 7.

14+9+13+5 = 41 ergo r1c9 = 4!!!!!

Oops! Had it the other way all the time. Guess some times your mind just gets stuck.

Thanks Cathy.
