Times books: are all puzzles unique?

Postby Sabreman64 » Fri Nov 04, 2005 8:58 pm

As there is a growing range of Times sudoku books, I would like to know if all the puzzles are unique, or are any of them reprinted in more than one book? The following is a list of Times sudoku books:

Books 1 to 4
Ultimate
Junior
Bumper
For Beginners
Collins Gem

I've omitted Killer (the puzzles must be unique since it's the only Times book that contains killers) and Gift Set Books 1 to 3 (for obvious reasons) from the list.

I think they're all unique, except (I think) that the Collins Gem ones are just littler reissues of the regular books. They can churn out new puzzles just as easily as recycle old ones, so there's no reason not to really.

Amazon says this for The Ultimate - " The ultimate treat for Sudoku fans. This is a new collection of 150 unpublished puzzles of all levels......" and this about book 3 and book 2 "....This book contains over 100 unpublished puzzles with four levels of difficulty. ......." (emphases mine).

I would assume that they are all original and unpublished but those contained in the New York Times books, for example, may contain a puzzle (or more) that's been seen here. Not that I'd notice, myself.

I'd like to know for curiosity's sake too, but reckon that the best way to find out is to PM Wayne.

Since they can create an essentially infinite supply of new puzzles at the press of a button, it would seem that, aside from anything, it'd be easier to just fill every book with new puzzles than to copy old ones.

Incidentally, I don't know if any other readers of theguardian have noticed this, but all of that paper's puzzles have previously been published in the Sudoku magazine published by Puzzler Media.

I don't get The Guardian so I hadn't noticed, but it's less surprising, as all their puzzles are handmade, so they don't have an inexhaustible supply.
