Tarek's Bank Holiday 1108 Sumo Special

Postby tarek » Sun Jul 10, 2011 5:38 pm

I had this puzzle for some time now. It is a variant of Sumo (Gattai-13).
Grids 1, 3, 11 & 13 are Sudoku-X
Grids 2, 6, 8 & 12 are Windoku
Grids 4, 5, 9 & 10 are Asterisk Sudoku
Grid 7 is a Clover-X (Asterisk Windoku X)
It shouldn't need more than doubles to solve.
I will be posting the solution on Aug 29th 2011 (bank holiday in England)

tarek, I hope you're still around. I'm giving this one another go.

I also gave it to a lady I met at the dentist's office the other day, and gave her a link to Richard's forum. She was very excited to see this puzzle, and said that she would be sharing it with her son as well. I warned her that pencil marks would be required, and she's familiar with those.

One of these days I'm going to actually manage to finish this puzzle. I've messed it up several times now, but I haven't given up!

:D to celebrate finishing it - when you do - I'll post a new one! (August when we have a bank holiday here in UK sounds to me like a good target ;) )

I will give it a shot! That puzzle has actually been sitting on my nightstand for a long time, waiting for me to get back to it. We are getting ready to move house again, but I'm trying to make a point of spending more time on sudoku lately. I may have to print a fresh copy and start over again, though.

It shouldn't need more than doubles to solve.

It needs more when you don't use the hidden windoku constraints.

I agree that the difficulty level of this puzzle is higher than the complexity of just managing all the constraints. when you are using locked candidates, doubles and triples then this would go into difficult territory with that in mind …

If there is a next time … It will definitely be easier!!!

I thought I posted a walkthrough for this puzzle specifically but it seems that I didn't … I will post one at some stage

Looking at my notes for this puzzle, apparently each time I've tried it, I made a mistake at some point (probably missing an elimination somewhere, or making an incorrect one). The last time, it was in grid 7.

I may have to double-check all of my pencil-marks, as well. Puzzles like this that are a combination of variants are a bit more challenging in that regard. However, if I read correctly, it appears that the latest version of Richard Broughton's SudokuSolver may be able to handle puzzles like this now. I'll have to play with that some more. That would certainly simplify and possibly eliminate the pencil-mark issue.

solution path to critical point

Postby tarek » Sun Jun 21, 2020 8:04 pm

In here I present my solver's solution path (including an unfruitful x-wing) to the point where using the generalized form of locked candidates is needed. Some would use this technique regularly in variants & in Sukaku Explainer it replaces the pointing & claiming in Sudoku Variants with a rating of 2.9 and would be exhausted prior to using subsets.

At this point I'll focus on grid 3 (the top right grid):
Here you have 3 possible elimination steps using the generalized form of locked candidates:

5 is locked in r9: r6c6<>5
Image

9 is locked in r3: r7c3<>9

9 is locked in the Anti-Diagonal r3c3<>9

One of the last 2 is enough to advance this grid and the rest of the puzzle back in the traditional way

[EDIT: Polished the partial solution path]
