From pattern game 174, some "superior plus puzzles"

Use naked quad or jellyfish

3.8 = swordfish
the 4.0 puzzle uses a swordfish + a hidden triplet

If this is what you are looking for, I can provide you many more... but quad or jellyfish are rare !

thanks !!

( indeed Swordfish is much more common than Jellyfish or quartet,
therefore most "superior plus" puzzles are Swordfish puzzles )

*
nice to see your 4.0 example,
that's less common ( and trickier to solve )

My total set of naked quad and jellyfish is about 110 puzzles.
The set of swordfish puzzles is about 2,500 puzzles.
Does any one want to see the rest ?

  • Jellyfish or quartet are not very common,
    please do post them.

  • Swordfish puzzles are more common,
therefore only the "best" should be posted --
e.g. puzzles which require 2 Swordfish,
    or Swordfish + X-wing,
    or Swordfish + trio

i don't have a definition for the "best",
but if you do post 2,500 puzzles
      then i'll try some filtering to find a small number of goodies;

e.g. from the Swordfish puzzles you have posted,
      i'd try this first --

        .3.7.......6..1.2.2...4.8...1..5......81.43......3..6...5.1...2.7.9..4.......6.8.

which would you prefer ?

    not the "best" puzzle,
    but interesting for the oddity:

    • does it qualify as "superior plus" ?
yes ! (requires quartet or Swordfish-or-larger)

    • does it require quartet ?
      no !!

    • does it require Swordfish-or-larger ?
      no !!

I'm watching this thread with interest, because I'm hoping it will provide me with a set of puzzles that will help me with my swordfish/jellyfish skills. Is there a single listing somewhere of all of the puzzles that have been accepted into the "superior plus" category so far, or must I peruse the entire thread to collect them? It's not clear to me whether the listing in the first post of this thread is complete (as of now).

I haven't updated the list of puzzles in the first post for a long time. The original idea of the post was a collective effort to collect 100 superior plus puzzles. That was achieved long ago.

So I guess the answer to my question is no, there isn't a single list--they're scattered throughout the thread.

When I look for subsets I always count the remaining open cells in a house. The reason is I like to take advantage of an idea called "wrapping". Wrapping is when two different techniques kill the same target candidates in the same kill-zone. For example, you can have a Naked Quad wrapping a Hidden Triple. Since finding a Naked Quad is easier to find than a Hidden Triple, if a house has 7 remaining open cells, I always look for a Naked Quad. Here are the cell counts and what I look for in each case.

5 cells - Naked Triple, Hidden Pair
6 cells - Naked Triple, Hidden Pair, Naked Quad
7 cells - Naked Quad
8 cells - Naked Quad
9 cells - Naked Quad

I never look for Naked Quintets. I only look for Naked Quads when a house has 7 or more open remaining cells. Finding Naked Triples is about the same difficulty has finding Hidden Pairs. But I usually look for Naked Triples first.

Here's a tutorial video I did titled, "dxSudoku #54 Hidden Triple with Wrapping":
