Ruud's specialty puzzles

Postby enxio27 » Wed Dec 25, 2013 11:07 pm

This is a repost of my message on the Sudocue forums, in case those go down. I've also posted it to Richard Broughton's SudokuSolver forums.

I've been "collecting" a bunch of Ruud's specialty puzzles that aren't found in the usual Sudocue archives--puzzles he's posted to various forums, etc. A few of these gems are on his specialty page, often accompanied by amusing descriptions (I've included those where possible). Here's what I've found so far, listed in chronological order by posting date. I hope you enjoy these.

Mentioned in Ruud's description of the Mystery Letter Sudoku at http://sudocue.net/special.php

Here is a list of names that you can use to determine the cage sums:

A = Shankar
B = Ball
C = Ono
D = Schindler
E = Kennedy
F = Krupa
G = Pritchard
H = Hampton
I = Mandela
J = Cage Cool
K = Flynn
L = Lovell
M = Fitzgerald
N = Patton
O = Shuster
P = Appel
Q = Welles
R = Kreiski
S = Guinness
T = Bohr
U = Piaf
V = Gillespie
W = Callas
X = Teller
Y = Barbera

To make this puzzle a little more RUUDICULOUS, I'm not telling you how to convert the list of names into cage sums, but you'll figure that out soon enough.

12x12 DG (September 8, 2006)
Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php

12x12 Sudoku with Disjoint Groups. The given numbers have horizontal and vertical symmetry, which fits nicely with this format. You need more than just singles to solve it. The Disjoint Groups constraint may not be familiar to you. Every cell that has the same relative position in each 3x4 box must contain a different number. This extra constraint helps you solve the puzzle, but it is very hard to check, certainly in such a large puzzle.

Crossword Killer 1 (September 15, 2006)
Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php

This puzzle is a mix of Killer Sudoku and Word Finder. Only a part of the 9x9 grid is covered with cages. The numbers in these cages must add up to the given sum. The cells which are not covered by cages must contain valid English words. For instance, there is a horizontal word of 4 letters in row 1, sharing the first letter with a vertical word of 8 letters in column 2. The normal Sudoku rules also apply, where you must use the number assigned to each letter. Without the Killer part, you cannot find the words. Without the words, you cannot solve the Killer part. The interaction between these 2 parts makes it one of the most challenging Sudoku variants.

Crossword Killer 2 (September 28, 2006)
Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php

Dear diary. I have created a second Crossword Killer. No need to explain the rules again to those poor addicts. The 9 letter word should not be too difficult to guess, but if they cannot find it, they’d better not attempt to solve the puzzle. Although the set of letters were tempting me, I resisted using unseemly words in the puzzle.

Killer X 01 (October 5, 2006)
Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php

The new Special is a Killer-X with a dazzling cage pattern. The are no single innies or outies. There are no pairs of innies or outies. There are plenty of triple innies and outies. 3 is the magic number. Do not forget the diagonals. They may help.

Sukaku #001 (October 12, 2006)
Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php

I have a new program that can generate a very interesting variant of Sudoku. It is not new, but I’ve given it a new name.

Suuji Kakure
Image

This translates into: “The digits are hidden”. Following an ancient Japanese tradition, I will call it Sukaku.

Complete the puzzle in such a way that each row, each column and each 3x3 box contains digits 1 through 9. Sounds familiar? In a Sukaku, there are no digits placed in the grid. Instead I will give you a grid with possibilities. Because there are no given numbers, the puzzle can be more difficult than the hardest Sudoku you've ever seen. This puzzle is not too difficult. I found some real baddies, which cannot be solved by some of the best solvers, which I will publish at a later date.

Here is a Sudoku without given numbers. Instead, you have to start with the pencilmark grid. The absence of given numbers startles most solver programs, so you may have to use the grey matter for this one. The unique solution has been verified with DLX.

Sukaku 3 (October 12, 2006)
Found at pencilmark-only-sudoku-t4929.html

While I was fine-tuning my generator, it came up with a remarkable puzzle. Every constraint has at least 4 candidates left. There is no logical move to start with. SudoCue has to start with a guess (using brute force). There are 3 guesses needed with all techniques including tabling enabled.

Mystery Letter Sudoku (October 13, 2006)
Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php

Many people have solved this puzzle by now, thanks to a big hint by Motris. He happens to be a chemist.

This is a little one-off gimmick. To figure out the clues, you need to find a way to convert the letters into numbers. People who enjoyed my Celebrity Killer may think this is similar, but not so. Use the forum if you want to share your insights with fellow addicts. Once you know how to convert the letters into numbers, the Sudoku can be solved with moderate techniques. If nobody has found an answer in a week, I will post a small hint. Good luck with this one!

Mystery Decompression Sudoku (November 10, 2006)
Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php
NOTE: Image is a SPOILER! Read below first!

Here is a new type of puzzle, inspired by a post on the Sudoku Programmers forum. The following line represents a Sudoku. The digits are the given numbers and the letters A, B, C and D replace the empty cells. Each letter represents a decompression instruction like “insert 2 empty cells”. The letters have no specific order. That would be too easy. However, to help you on your way, I will give you a hint: The given numbers form a symmetrical pattern.

Thanks to ocean who discovered an error in this string, but found the solution anyway. The error has been fixed.

Kazaguruma (Windmill) (November 28, 2006)
Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php

Now that the Samurai contest is going, I am honored to introduce to you a new type of overlapping puzzle. This puzzle has 5 overlapping sudokus, like a Samurai, but the overlap is 2 boxes in stead of one. Because the shape reminded me of a windmill, and because I live in Holland, I named this variant Kazaguruma, the Japanese word for windmill. This puzzle can be solved with relatively easy techniques, but you can also use the twin nonets technique to speed things up.

Shaolin-X #001 (X-Treme Shaolin) (November 28, 2006)
Found at http://www.sudocue.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=418

I post this puzzle here just to show you that I can now create any Sudoku variant you can imagine. Here is a world-premiere: the Shaolin-X. It has 25 constituent Sudoku-X puzzles. 16 in a 4 x 4 formation, connected by 9 in a 3x3 formation. Pythagoras would have appreciated the beauty of these numbers. The total number of cells is 1701.

As for required solving techniques... I'm not sure. You need several moderate and advanced moves, but I cannot tell you the exact list of solving techniques. It has a guaranteed unique solution. I can also guarantee that this puzzle will definitely ruin your family life, if you had any left...

Clueless Shaolin-X #001 (December 1, 2006)
Found at viewtopic.php?t=5099

This is the worst monstrosity I've ever created and I would like to share it with you. :)

The basic puzzle is a Shaolin or Gattai-25. In addition, the blue boxes, when combined, form a 26th sudoku. All overlapping regions (yellow and blue) are clueless. As it happens, 22 additional boxes also turned out to be clueless. All 26 constituent puzzles, including the blue one, are Sudoku-X, so the diagonals also need to contain digits 1 through 9.

As for required solving techniques: think singles, locked candidates, pairs and triples, crossovers, simple coloring and XY-Wings in the diagonals.

Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php

This is a monster that you will only find on this website, because nobody else has the guts to make such puzzles.

Be warned. Be scared. Be prepared to take on this Clueless-Shaolin-X. 26 interlinked puzzles, number 26 being the combination of the blue boxes. Diagonals also need digits 1 through 9 in all 26 constituent puzzles. And of course, all overlapping regions are clueless...

Name that Album Killer (February 13, 2007)
Found at http://www.sudocue.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1915

Here's a puzzle in a series that I started on another forum. The puzzle requires 2 answers:

1. The solution of the Zero-X-Killer on top.
2. The name of the album below the killer.

I removed artist and title, so you have to browse your CD collection to find it. It was released in 1996. The killer is Ruudiculous until proven otherwise...

007 Killer-X (April 2007?)
Found at a forum that is now dead. Date is approximate.

This is a Zero Killer-X on the 007 theme. The candidates are two 0s and 1-7; no repeats on the diagonals. This is a "twin" puzzle, both grids have to be used together to obtain a unique solution.

[I don't have the SumoCue code available. Can any of you help?]

Queen's Day Special Clueless Taiken-X (April 24, 2007)
Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php

Each April 30, here in Holland we celebrate an ancient tradition: Queens’s Day. Sort of Independence Day without the "in" part. That day, the Queen and her family go visit and pretend to like their subjects who pretend to like them back. Orange is the color of choice on Queen’s Day.

The following puzzle is dedicated to our beloved Queen. It is Big, Orange and Clueless. All constituent Sudokus, including the 22nd Clueless Sudoku in the blue cells, require digits 1 through 9 in both diagonals.

Catch-22 Taiken (April 24, 2007)
Found at http://sudocue.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=671

This puzzle is similar in shape to the Queens Day puzzle on the special page, but all comparisons end there. This puzzle is bad, reeeeally bad! The only sure facts about this puzzle are a) it has a single solution b) basic techniques will only solve 26 cells.

The name refers to the 22 constituent puzzles, intertwined in such a way that there's no escape. All constituent sudokus have diagonal constraints and the blue cells form a 22nd sudoku with the same constraints.

Joseph Heller wrote:There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle."
"That's some catch, that catch-22," he observed.
"It's the best there is," Doc Daneeka agreed.

22 sudokus with strong links, one of them disjoint, blue and clueless. You know the drill. This one's easier, so no medal for the winner.

Clueless Taiken #004 (May 1, 2007)
Found at http://www.dailysudoku.co.uk/sudoku/for ... t=gattai22

To celebrate the return of this forum and get it going again, here is a Gattai-22 with a clueless component. The 21 visible Sudokus are overlapping like a normal Gattai. The blue boxes belong to the 22nd Sudoku.

Moderate solving techniques are sufficient to solve this puzzle, but the sheer size makes it error-prone. To give you an impression: there are 110 hidden pairs in the shortest solving path...

Ronin Samurai-X (May 28, 2007)
Found at http://sudocue.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=701

In ancient Japan, a Samurai who has lost his master was called Ronin. These uncontrollable outlaws often caused uproar in the country. So much for today's history lesson...

I decided to call this Samurai-X Ronin because it is impossible to master. It has only 70 clues. To give you an impression: The full suite of techniques for the regular Samurai puzzles (with Diagonal techniques added) only manage to solve 2 cells.

If you can avoid bifurcation (a euphemism for 'guessing'), this will be a great exercise to discover multi-grid AIC's, BUG-Lites and coloring patterns. Do not forget the diagonals. They will be needed.

Black Friday Taiken (July 13, 2007)
Found at http://sudocue.net/special.php
A printable version can be found here that is easier on the eyes as well as on the print cartridge.

We were all shocked by a total forum blackout today. Ten years from now, addicts will still remember this day and ask each other: "Where were you when the forum went down on sudocue.net?". They may even write a song about the event.

The following Taiken will make sure we never forget! You need some creative moves to solve this puzzle, but it does not require any trial & error.

Erm ... where do I write pencilmarks?

Here's some testing material (with diagonals):

Holiday Special Clueless Taiken-X (July 19, 2007)
Found at http://www.sudocue.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3101

Combining variations and turning them into huge overlapping puzzles is fun, especially when the outcome is a great puzzle. This Holiday Special will keep you busy during those long hours on the beach with no Internet access and too much time on your sweaty hands. 8-)

The format is a Clueless-Taiken-X. Look at all those empty nonets! It's not as bad as Catch-22, but close.

First 12-Clue Sudoku-X (July 23, 2007)
Found at http://www.sudocue.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3142

The minimum number of clues for a Sudoku-X has been 13 for the last two years. This weekend, I started a search for more 13's and possibly a 12. Here's a 12 I found this morning. :D

Clueless Windoku-X (August 11, 2007)
Found at http://www.sudocue.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=624

Here is a fullsize Clueless Wind-X. Each of the 13 constituent puzzles is a Sudoku-X. Of these, 4 are placed in a familiar Windoku pattern and completely clueless.

This puzzle is very tough, but it helps when you discover the twin nonets and the 36 hidden groups. Oops, now I said it! :oops: Happy puzzling!

Here is a V2X of this week's Assassin. It is solvable by logic, but you need a lot of it. Fortunately, you will have a little more time now with the upcoming Holidays, for which I wish you all the best.

Re: Ruud's specialty puzzles

Postby enxio27 » Wed Dec 25, 2013 11:37 pm

I have now combed through all of Ruud's posts in the still-existing forums he used to frequent, and I've posted all of his specialty puzzles I could find, including the killer, jigsaw, letter, etc. I previously skipped. I've added codes for almost all of the puzzles (help with the codes for a few killers as noted would be much appreciated) and Ruud's often-amusing puzzle descriptions. I've also marked (hopefully) all of the broken forum links.

I am still missing one of his puzzles (no image or puzzle code available at all). If you can help with this one, please let me know!

Also, I'm missing original images of the following puzzles. I've recreated images using the puzzle codes, but Ruud's puzzle images were usually interesting, and often significant to the puzzle (although not essential for solving). If you have copies of the original images, I would really like to have them. I suspect that the image for the Name that Album Killer was the album cover art, and Ruud mentioned that the image of the Diagonal Surprise Assassin had something to do with traditional Dutch candy.

Finally, if you discover one I've somehow missed, please post here so that I can add it to the collection.

Yikes! I never would have dreamed that anybody would exceed such a limit. Congratulations!

I'll stop now, before I reach 50,000. :)
