i've not used the program for 2 weeks (on hols), and all was fine before i left.

BUT when i tried to play today, everything starts off fine, the little hint pops up on starting the program, then i click "new" and a game appears.

the game looks fine apart from a heavily outlined centre space in the top left grid, which hasn't been there before. also, my cursor disappears over the game itself. i can click any of the status bar features, all work, but still, i can't get onto the game itself.

help!

It sounds as if you have accidently switched to keyboard input mode.
Press F4 for game options and select the Input Mouse option (bottom right on the General 1 tab)

In keys mode you use the arrow keys to move the highlighted box around and the numeric keys to enter numbers
