Killer 14/11 - Stumped!

Postby PaulIQ164 » Mon Nov 14, 2005 3:07 pm

I've got this far:

Code: Select all
   ¦   ¦
   ¦   ¦
   ¦  1¦
---+---+---
   ¦   ¦
   ¦   ¦
   ¦   ¦
---+---+---
   ¦ 8 ¦
   ¦  7¦
   ¦ 96¦

And aside from some obvious restrictions (the big 16-er has to be 12346, and the 14-er down column 6 has to be 2345), I'm stuck. Any ideas?

¦ 8 ¦
6¦ 7¦
¦ 96¦

I did it earlier today without too much trouble (no Tippex !), but I can't tell from my pencil marks the way in which I did it.
What I do know though is that Lerpy's '6' is not correct !

Agreed. I suggest a close inspection of the vertical 14 in box 1.

I'm not seeing it I'm afraid. What's annoying me is that there are so many 15-pairs. I know they all alternete 87/96/87/..., but which is which? Argh!

Look at the 14 and 15 in box 1 together (only one way to make 29 with 4 numbers !). One of those numbers cannot go in one of the cages. This then gives us things in box 2....!

Aah, I've got it now.

The clock thing is probably because we've moved back to GMT. There ought to be a box somewhere in your profile that you can check/uncheck to fix it.

My way was different (all part of the interest)

In box 3, 5 numbers are locked, so the remaining 4 are what they are. Now compare back to the 14 2-some in box 1 and r3c1 becomes clear.

incidentally, if you have the 8 on r7c5, you also have the figure above it.

This is the first time taht I have seen the need to add up to 90 in boxes 6 and 9 to get the 7 on r9c6.

Hmm! I had got a bit further but went wrong on it. Can't remember from this morning how I got to this point but the 13-cage in column 2 has candidates of 498 (top) and 495 (bottom) but I've already got 9 and 8 in column 2 so something's not right!!

Code: Select all
786 --- ---
9-- --- -37
523 741 968

-97 8-- ---
--- --- -7-
--- -7- 8--

--- -8- 7--
--- --7 –8-
87- --- ---

I recreated the puzzle using DJApe's Perfect Sudoku (the old version - no longer available - where you can create Killer Sudoku's). Having done that, it said there were no solutions! But I'll have another go anyway.

Cathy, I don't know how to help, but you have gone adrift in rows 1,3 and 9

Amended my profile - it had said "GMT + 1 hour".
Stupid options if you ask me - it should just say "UK time" or whatever.

Not clear to me. I understand the first sentence, but not the second - I don't see how how this fixes r3c1.

It's OK - I've done it now:) Phew! And I'd made a mistake when dubbing into DJ's software - there obviously is a solution, but I won't post it so as not to spoil the fun for those still trying to do it!

Nice to see that The Times can produce a properly 'Tough' puzzle occasionally. I was expecting an 'Easy' since it's Monday.

afjt,

in some order. r2c9,r3c7,8 and 9 are 6789. To make 14 in r2c1 and r3c1, r3c1 has to be ...
