Today's killer is the very one which appeared on the front page of last Wednesday's T2, when the killers were introduced.

I noticed that too, straight away. Bit hard though, I can only place the central '5' so far. But my head's in a funny place today.

Well, as I said, there's a 5 slap bang in the middle. This is because each row etc. must total 45, and the visible groups in row 5 total 40. Therefore, there must be a 5 in the very middle.

Now I'm stuck, as I said. I know where lots of things might be, I just don't know where they are.

I would next concentrate on the values of the cells at either end of the fifth (middle) column to help you ease into the puzzle.

todays killer

"180"

apart from the five you have mentioned there is another way of getting a couple of easy numbers. columns 1-4 must add to 180 giving you c5,r9. likewise columns 5-9 giving you c5,r1

hope this helps.

Once you have c5r1/c6r1 and c4r9/c5r9 you should be able to limit the numbers used in the row either side of the central five. Also look at c6r3/c6r4/c7r4 and c3r6/c4r6/c4r7 for more numbers

I already had the possibilities for the middle row, and I knew I was missing something. The 180 is the key, cheers.

I did not notice that, but it proves one thing...I'm getting better.
I gave up with it last week and today I finished in about 35 mins:D
