Leren,

I suspect this has been discussed before. The wing is perfectly clear but I don't understand terms 2-3.

Marty, you picked up on some typos, which I've now fixed. Thanks for spotting them.

The 6-cell ADP shown above would seem to be an ideal method to use for the -5r5c7 elimination. All but one of the six extra candidates have simple chains leading to the desired common conclusion:
Code: Select all
5r4c5 – r4c3 = r5c1 ---------------5r5c7
5r6c5 – r3c5 = r3c7 ---------------5r5c7
5r46c8 ----------------------------5r5c7
1r6c5 – r6c9 = r5c7 ---------------5r5c7
1r4c5 – r4c3 = r5c1 – 1r5c7 ???
Regarding the last chain, I understand that starting a chain with a false premise may actually lead to the desired common conclusion, but such a chain is certainly not apparent to me in the above grid.

Am I completely missing something obvious about ADPs? Or, does the ADP processing simply fail in this case?

Many thanks, DAJ, for the helpful feedback! That's a very interesting use of a fish pattern to construct the missing chain. Much still to learn about ADPs...maybe next I'll try for the externals analysis! :)

All non-DP candidates in an ADP must lead to a common outcome to be useful. Here is the chain you are missing:

Code: Select all
(1-5)r4c5 = [ Sashimi X-Wing r36\c57 w/fin cells=r6c89 ] - 5r5c7

The ADP can be skipped by using:

Code: Select all
5r5c1 = r4c3 - r4c5 = [ Sashimi X-Wing r36\c57 w/fin cells=r6c89 ] => -5 r5c7

Danny, I've been going crazy looking at this stuff. in the first chain above, I can't figure out why the Sashimi is embedded or why the strong inference that has the Sashimi forced if r4c5<>5. I don't know how you'd say that chain or describe it to someone else. Similar confusion with the next chain. I also don't understand why r6c89 are fin cells.

I'm hardly an authority on such matters, but if I'd been alert enough to spot the pattern, my posted solution would've said, rightly or wrongly, Sashimi on 5 in r36=> -5r5c7.
