This may be an interesting variant of Sudoku.
But I think the following (more squarish) graphical representation (restricted to a block) would be more readable and would better show the closeness to Sudoku :

where the # are empty cells that don't belong to the grid - similar to black cells in Kakuro or Crosswords. But here the pattern of black cells in each block is fixed.

Apart from this, I don't see any fundamental difference with Sudoku.
Whips[1] (intersections / whatever you call them) are very similar (though simpler).
Subsets (including Fish) are very similar.

The least you could do is publish here a non-trivial puzzle.

So it is a 16x16 sudoku with half the cells not used and using only numbers 1-8. Here is a randomly generated solution grid:

It is not a variant. It's only a different graphical representation of the same puzzle.

The proper triangular variants exist that do not conform to square boxes.

The one you are referring to as representing the same puzzle actually conforms to triangular boxes and square boxes on the same grid. However, you can also have it in a form that only conforms to triangular boxes on a grid, hence it's a variant.
