Hi, people!
I didn't systematically study patterns with 4 empty boxes, so I don't know minimal number of clues for such patterns. It's very likely the minimal number of clues is 20. coloin years ago searched for 9plus12 puzzles. He found 152 such puzzles (with filled central box). It's very hard to find 9plus12 puzzles, so it looks like minimal number of clues in 8 boxes is 12. I checked those 152 puzzles for number of empty boxes. 12 of them have 2 empty boxes, 83 of them have 1 empty box, the rest (57) have no empty boxes. No 9plus12 puzzles (central box is filled) with 4 empty boxes were found. I think, the minimal number of clues in 8 boxes when 4 boxes are empty - is not less than 13.

Yes Serg 9plus12game - those 152 box9plus12s must be close to the total - but as ever no way of knowing !

Yes in the interim - I have fired off a barrage !
Its no proof but a non minimal 20C has not appeared

Its also hard to know how big the search space is as the 9plus13 puzzles are isolated in small groups though more often singularly at the -3+3 level
Its easy enough to remove the clues from the 4 boxes - but at present am unable to limit return to the 4 boxes

So - I found 114 9plus13s - [ with x9 = 1036 8plus13s, ands only 138 7plus13s - which were all minimal] - this could well be approaching the total.

These have been morphed preferentially buts its not helpful in reducing any search [for me]

Along the way over 2500 6plus14s and 171 5plus15s [all minimal] puzzles were collected - and this is still expanding as - the search space is significantly larger still

Its hard to imagine there can be so many ways to put a few clues in a few boxes !!!

Ive not analysed the B12369 which solve with 9 clues in B3 - nor their gangster equivalent solutions in B4578

As an interim I have found a minimal puzzle with max clues in B4578 18plus8

well there aint been any discussion ! ... but those are pretty good ones , will see if I can better !

I guess if there isn't a 13plus6 there might be a 14plus5 ....

Regarding the 15plus5s I found - interestingly only 2 of the 3 valid ways to put 5 clues in box3 are represented
