For a quick fix, I modified SEHINTS.jar (called it SukakuHints.jar) to read a line of 729 chars of pencil-marks. This rates tarek's sukaku as SE=2.6/1.5/1.5. It fails to rate Ruud's sukaku, this may be due a 'long' variable being 64 bits, and coincidentally, a sudoku with the minimum of givens also has (81-17=) 64 empty cells.

SukakuHints.jar will rate sukaku puzzles, so long as the solution path does not use Exclusion and Chain techniques until there are 64 or less empty cells!!

Wow 1to9only, that is 24h for an action which is better than my 24 months+ for an action. Thanks.
Although I don't know anybody else apart from me that uses 729 line representation for Sukakus, it is something I would recommend especially for processing large number of puzzles from/to files. again thanks!

The 64 bit explains why SE insists on a minimum of 17 clues. It's a shame as most of the hard stuff will have >64 empty cells. The ultimate sukaku rater would need to have the chains coded into anything higher than 81 bits which looks likely to be 128 bits. That will need a big recoding job only to target sukaku puzzles

I actually can't wait to see how SukakuHints handles some of my puzzles & it could be a good way filter some better puzzles for intermediate/advanced players

I think that what you did is excellent as SE is one the popular rating programs. The 128 bit recoding looks to be a big job which only serve the selfish purpose of beating the hardest known sudoku rated puzzles with a sukaku puzzle.

I vaguely remember playing with the JAVA files when I was involved in the PURE fish threads so I may have a play with them thanks

Tarek, if you've waited 24 mths+, you can wait a few days more!!! :lol:

as I investigate a few more things:

- add the sukaku line read code (in my hints.java) into serate.java - this will allow mutiple sukakus (one per line) to be rated (batch mode as in patterns game!) - this is just duplicating the code!

- add the sukaku line read code into SudokuIO.java (in method loadFromSingleLine) - this to allow a 729 line of pencil-marks to be loaded from the clipboard, the read/load code are very similar, so this change should not be too difficult!! I hope to get this working in a a few days time...

[there's too much work involved in getting paste to clipboard, load/save from/to file to work...]

This is my custom SukakuExplainer, a modification to SudokuExplainer to support pencilmark sudoku (sukaku) [Tarek's requirement, see previous posts]. Tarek, I think you'll like this!

The sukaku must be in one line (729 pencilmarks) format. Multi-lines is currenly not supported [code changes needed to support this].

SukakuExplainer supports both sukaku and sudoku - my changes should not affect existing sudoku functionality, but there may be (untested) side-effects. For example, some rebuildPotentialValues() is commented out so a sukaku can be loaded and correctly displayed. This means that if you load a sudoku, the display is messed up - click on 'Tools' and 'Reset potential values' to get the pencilmarks back - or use SudokuExplainer!!

SukakuExplainer can load a sukaku from either file or clipboard [both call the same code!] - it must contain a single line of (at least) 729 pencilmarks. Anything else (shorter and multiple lines) (not fully tested) is processed as input for a standard sudoku.

For a sukaku, saving to file and pasting to clipboard are not currently supported [no code changes made, so these functions will just save a sudoku]. [If anyone is up for a challenge, 'saveToWriter' outputs a sudoku, change it to output a sukaku.]

The serate and hints functionality work on both sudoku and sukaku - and work for single and multi lines.

Note that the program (command line) crashes when rating Ruud's sukaku (see an earlier post) - this occurred because there remained 80 empty cells, and Permutations.java cannot handle 'countBits > 64' [!presumed to be the number of empty cells passed to the method!] when solving in AlignedExclusion.java. [See Note 2 below.]

To invoke the GUI:

Note 1: I only rebuilt (using jdk-6u45) the changed source, dropped them into an unzipped SudokuExplainer (1.2.1.3), and repackaged.

Note 2: I tried rating (then hints) on the first 2 of Tarek's 11 sukakus posted a few years back, after the first naked single, then quite a number of forcing chains, the program appears to get stuck (hangs!) for quite a long time. I Ctrl-C'ed out of it! One explanation: The GUI reports that Ruud's and Tarek's first 2 sukakus are 'invalid' as they have multiple solutions!! [Ruud's post of his sukaku does mention that the solution requires '1 guess'.]

Caution: [This is the no warranty clause!] SE was made for sudokus, it's modified for sukakus - whilst I think it works satisfactorily well with sukakus, I've noted in testing (rating and hints) that the program crashes, hangs... So Good Luck!

I tried following your instructions but I stumbled on:

If you've just installed Java, this is a known issue.

1. You can run SukakuExplainer once with administrator priviledge to create the registry entries for some SE settings.
2. Or create the 2 reg files shown in the post, and run them in a command prompt.

Here is a puzzle which should be solved by x cycles … I haven't had a play with the source files to enable/disable methods yet but it hit the AlignedPairExclusion block

The following were rated successfully. I haven't yet analyzed the Hints path but my assumption that the Empty cells were <64 by the time the higher techniques were called in. all of these puzzles started with 81 Empty cells.

In the GUI, under Options, Solving techniques..., untick Aligned Pair Exclusion, and you can step through to the solution.

Unfortunately, the solving techniques list is not saved in the registry for later reuse, so to get the command line rating and hints working you have to comment out the AlignedPairExclusion code in the Solver(Grid grid) constructor (Solver.java), and rebuild.

The sukaku rates as ED=6.6/1.2/1.2.

So My investigation would be to remove the aligned pair & aligned triplet from the solution path and see if that works or does this >64 epmty cells affects other higher techniques too?!

I added a few puzzles to my post above just as you posted your reply!

The problem code Permutations.java is called when solving APE and ATE - I think Explainer will be affected by a crash! Permutations.java is used elsewhere but should not cause a problem (countbits value is 9), leaving UniqueLoops.java (Type3Hints!) as having a possible crash problem (countbits = remValues.length) - I'm guessing this can be > 64!! The advanced methods may be ok (I've too little advanced sudoku skills, so don't take my word on this!).

One solution (workaround) would be build a SukakuExplainerNOAE.jar for use when the APE/ATE crash occurs.

So the next on the todo list for re-compiling:

1. Change the Minimum number of values check (which will give an error if less than 8 on gui)
2.Remove APE/ATE from the method hierarchy. Alternatively look at permutations.java and see if there is a way to allow countBits to accept 65-81. The code appears simple enough but will it allow simple changes
