If you were running a more modern version of Windows, I would say it is because you have got Sudoku installed in a User account instead of in the Administrator account - but that can't apply to you.

It may be, nevertheless, because an expected 'write' to the Registry is not happening or is not being allowed to happen. But if your ability to read and/or write to the Registry were impaired, you would notice other strange behavior on your computer.

I'm afraid I don't really have any good ideas, at the moment.

Are you up-to-date with the latest (free) updates and upgrades available for Windows 98 from Microsoft?

Is your computer free of viruses?

I could suggest that an upgrade of your OS would fix the problem - but that is a big thing to suggest, just to work around a problem with a game. And it is true that Sudoku is supposed to work with Windows 98 (and it does - just not in your case, I guess).

I have the same problem.

Have you gotten anywhere with a fix? I have the same exact problem; the error message is the same except for the register numbers. I am also running Windows 98 - my upgrades are all up to date.

Here's hoping for a solution,

Hello reMark.

I'm sorry, this mystery is no closer to be being revealed.

Workaround for the Win98 problem

Postby reMark » Thu Sep 22, 2005 9:56 pm

This should be workable for anyone having the same problem as James Hibbard and myself, namely, the persistent error message upon closing the Sudoku program. Apparently, this is only a problem for the few of us left still using Windows98. (There are advantages to using the old OS, the main one being that it flies under the radar of most of the really vicious viruses.)

Anyway, my workaround is simply this: Instead of closing Sudoku, I either pause or minimize it. When I shut down my computer, it doesn't freeze up. This works and is fairly hassle-free - good enough for me. (I tried Microsoft online help, and they didn't have an answer either, so I'm going to leave it at that.)
