Happens all the time:(

it does indeed happen all the time

personally i tend to be stubborn - put the puzzle aside, look again later

i was hoping, though, that philo would respond,
e.g.
yes, that did it
or
thanks, that got me another couple of dozen cells, now i'm stuck again---
or something to let us know that the message was received

Right, Pat.

On The QBasic Forum, we often have the same problem. Someone posts a problem and we work hard to provide a useful response and that's it - the sound of crickets chirping.

I coined a term for such a person: "Ephemeralus" One who transiently exists. And I used to waste time trying to embarass ephemerali into responding by writing to their email, PM, etc. I finally recognized that just as there are self-centered people in school, work, and in traffic, such people also exist on forums. They come and ask a question and if they see an answer they go away satisfied. They have never said "thanks" to anyone in their life and don't plan to start now.

Of course, we don't really want thanks as such, it is just that it translates to "the information you provided is adequate". Which, in turn, means we don't have to keep responding with alternate solutions, etc., imagining the OP is still unsatisfied. I wouldn't even mind "I am unable to use your information and am not viewing this thread any longer". At least I know to forget about it.

Well, sorry to bend your ear. You struck a nerve.

In fairness I must point out that it's only been 5 days since the original post. Now, I myself have been guilty of leaving a thread hanging a couple times but should say that one of those times I went into hospital for a gall bladder op. There are reasons why someone might not post back. I'd tend to cut the guy some slack for a bit and see if he comes around again.

Just my $0.0002 (that's all its worth anymore!)

Good advice.

I actually try to do that in traffic and am pretty successful.

Someone drives like a maniac and cuts in front of you so your miss the next 5-minute stoplight. You could fume and stress out or else assume the driver just got a call from home that the baby fell off the crib and is bleeding from the mouth.

Assume the latter and you can calm down a lot.

That may be why I quit long ago worrying about ephemerali.

Welcome to the forum JJ. Good work solving this puzzle! I assume you did it with only pencil and paper. If so, 3 hours is pretty good time for your first day of SuDoku. In fact, many might not solve it all all without some computer help or at least a few weeks of experience.

Well said Pat and I've had the same thoughts myself at times. The responses from Mac and deKoven were also relevant as to why people may not return a simple "thank you" which, if sent, would remove that empty feeling in wondering whether they received your message or didn't understand your suggestions or whatever.:?:

There are many. Here is one I wrote
www.SuDoku.funURL.com

You have to solve the puzzle yourself, but it helps to have pencilmarks accurate, which it does. And it saves puzzles you can use another utility there to get into post format. And there is a tutorial for moves up to X-Wing and simple coloring.

The email notification, which presumably you received, includes a link to enable you to view the replies. As I understand it, if you don't view the reply then no more notifications are sent.
It's still nice to get your feedback and a happy New Year:) . Should you intend posting other puzzles or queries you can read about the procedure by clicking on this Thread.
