Oops! I have a better score in hand, but I'll leave you one day to submit a new proposal.

Yep!
209 just popped up after my last post with this:
Sol 3 Grid 4.JPG
Score 209
---------------------------------
Sol 3 Grid 4.JPG (19.78 KiB) Viewed 1092 times

What about this new challenge:
Fill the grid, get the maximum scrabble value, but using the maximum number of tiles allowed for each letter (i.e : E x 12, A x 9,..., Q x 1, Z x 1)
No blank tiles.

Here's the grid:

I'm starting from scratch. I hope there is at least a solution...

Well, I'll give it a go, but like you I'm starting from scratch, so don't expect anything from me for a few days. Looks tough with so few black squares.

PS - Just realized that this will alter the dictionaries significantly eg there is only one Z, so no more ZZZS's, PAZZAZZES's etc. I think that's a good thing.

PPS - Just flushed out the 9 letter word dictionary, and only 617 words were rejected, but the maximum word score has dropped from 47 to 31 !

There is at a least solution. I found this example (not a proposal) :
edited : my previous example was not "scrabble compatible"

It's only now that I see that the grid is 7 x 7. Well that should make things a lot easier.

Hi JPF, as always with your puzzles I really enjoy the programming challenges and the subsequent hunt for the maximal solution - can't wait for your next challenge.

I think the trick with this last one was provided by your last post - it then became evident that you needed to have two high scoring words in Row1 and Column 1, sharing a high scoring letter in r1c1. I experimented a bit with various Q and Z word combinations and finally got lucky. Even with tight restrictions on the words that could go in Row 1 and Column 1, the winning run still produced over 80,000,000 hits, with 4 of them scoring 118. There were also hits at 116 and 117.

As I said, can't wait for your next challenge.

Cheers, Leren

Here's the new grid. Same rules.
I'll give my first proposal tomorrow.
If I am right, the maximum possible is 158.

OK, I'll give it a go. Don't expect a response from me for a few days while I write the search algorithm.
