It will never lead to a solution.
Correct.
That's why the X-samurai s posted by m_b_metcalf also have some givens in the middle grid.
And only an asterisk cannot change that ?? But a WIndoku can !!! Correct??
I would have to look into it, but others are better versed in that than I am.
FWIW, I completed this puzzle this morning. I wasn't able to do with without pencil marks, but with pencil marks, I completed the middle grid on the first pass, and the other grids on the second.
This puzzle brought home once again the reason I don't try to do my own pencil marks. I had taken this puzzle with me on a trip out of town, but I printed it without pencil marks. While on my trip, I discovered that I would need pencil marks to solve the puzzle, and I drew out the grids on plain paper and tried to calculate the pencil marks myself. Clearly I made a mistake in doing so, and got stuck as a result. Once I arrived home, I printed the puzzle out with pencil marks (using Richard Broughton's SudokuSolver), and then I was able to complete the puzzle without difficulty. Lesson learned.
