How do I activate this program feature??

You have the option (if you want it) to display a list of the digits that already appear nine times – and the counting can be automatic.

View -> Game Options -> General2 Hall of Fame tab

In the lower left is an option called "wells". This enables markers in the right side of the bottom status bar. If you select manual, you have to manually click these on and off... Automatic, will, of course, fill the wells in for you as appropriate, but note that turning this on disqualifies you from hall of fame entries.

To manually fill a well, you need to select the number, and click the well icon on the toolbar (in default configuration this icon is between the "pause" and "check" icons). Other methods also exist... Search for "wells" in the help interface (index tab) for more.
