An experimental poem

Postby MCC » Fri Jun 02, 2006 2:57 pm

This is going to be a collaborative project, to see if we can produce a poem or piece of prose, hopefully making some sort of sense, but will probably turn out to be utter nonsense.

This poem will be made up from random words according to this rule:
Take any book, turn to page 66, count down 6 lines and take the 6th word on that line.

If you find that there is less than 6 lines of text, or no text at all on page 66, then record that word as 'Blank'.

For the moment each verse will consist 6 lines of 6 words.

Ignore any numbers that appear in counting and only use the 6th word not the 5th or 7th because you think it's a better word.

To start things off, I've taken six books by Steven J Gould from my bookshelf and here are the six words according to the above rule, as they came out with no rearranging.

6666 Poem

Ok then, we have four lines, only another two to go for the first verse, submitted by different people.

I was hoping against hope that it might make sense without rearranging, but it's not to be.

Once we have the six lines we'll see if they can be arranged to make sense in the form of a poem or piece of prose.

Any word can be substituted for a 'Blank' word.

This seems a bit slow So I'll add the sixth line.

In to the of by that

The six lines are then:
6666 Poem

Number of blank that which my
mind can the he worked she
under bed every had market paces
use been to they of the
New growing nipple neck abnormalities occasion
In to the of by that

Ok then let's see what we can make of this.
Remember you can substitute another word for 'blank.

She paces by the bed to blank the nipple of occasion that had been growing under my neck in the market that worked to every number of abnormalities which he could use that they (k)new of.

Of blank mind he paces by, to the growing number of abnormalities that they worked in my neck, that every new occasion to which she can market the nipple had been of use under the bed.

Is this the sort of thing you had in mind, MCC?

This is experimental emm, I had only a rough idea of what might happen, so, in a way, anything goes.

The word 'Blank' is there because there was no word on p66, line 6, word 6 of the book I chose.
Therefore you can insert any word you want in place of 'Blank' if you thing it will help things along.

You could try a limerick or a fib and see if this works.

So far I've not had much time to look at this, I'll have a look at this tonight and see if I can come up with something myself.

Ok then, this method is cumbersome, so I'll post my attempt and if people are willing, we will try some new or not, que sera, sera.

The growing number
Of market abnormalities
Had been that of mind

She occasion to bed
He in new paces

Of that which worked
Under the neck
My nipple use
By every can

To the Eternity.

EdwardP has posted six words. Let each word either start or end a six line poem.

Very deep, MCC. I had to read it a few times but I like it. You left they out – nice touch.:D

Having re-examined my scribblings I find I did leave a 'They' out, this is the poem with the 'They' in.

The growing number
Of market abnormalities
Had been that of mind

She occasion to bed
He in new paces

Of that which worked
Under the neck
My nipple use
By every can
They

To the Eternity.

I was trying to use just the words EdwardP posted, 'Metcular' was the combination of Method and Circular.

I should have put a space between Met and Cular.

Haiku
Method circular
Insufficiently, I
And us, met cular

Cular stands for:
Collaborative UC/Los Alamos Research (CULAR) Program.
