It is stated on the World Puzzle Federation official website that

In light of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the board of directors of the WPF has decided to postpone this year's World Puzzle and Sudoku Championships in Shanghai, China.

Plans for 2021 and beyond are still being worked out. An announcement will be made here as soon as we have more information.

This is a real tragedy. If the puzzles were an Olympic game, it would be even worse.

I know the speed solving on paper those championships are focused in is hardly appliable in this situation, but online speed solving is also a thing, and this could be a chance to expand on that (as a possible alternative).
I've seen that in Crossword contests and I believe Nikoli has organized some online speed-based events for Sudoku too.

There will be no World Sudoku/Puzzle Championship this year again.
There might be an online event, but final decisions about the online event has not been made.
