Has the search for a 16 clue sudoku ever been initiated as distributed computing project - like SETI?

Does anyone honestly believe a 16-clue single-solution sudoku exists? Effort might be better spent trying to develop a [edit: mathematical] proof that it cannot.

google sudoku boinc for the only project I am aware of
looks dead
doomed for failure at inception anyway -- at least for results in our lifetime
I recall they were trying to squeeze in on an exhaustive proof from both ends (small # clues ... 16 clues)
but didn't locate the original project goals though
