The question was, "who knows . . .?". The answer was "you (should know)", since it is easy enough to add up one column and multiply it by 9 (columns).

Sum of number 1-9 = 9*10/2 = 45. Multiply by 9 = 405.

Or, the numbers are 1 to 9, so the middle number is 5, hence the average of the numbers must be 5.

5 x 81 squares = 405.
