I understand that each row/column must contain all the numbers but what are you trying to solve? What are you trying to get to?

you're simply trying to fill in all the numbers in the grid. Each row and column must contain the numbers 1 to 9 once only, and each 3x3 box must contain the numbers 1 to 9 once only. Sounds easy when you say it.... Check out http://www.sudoku.com/howtosolve.htm for an overview.
