Washington Post's Sunday Puzzle?

Postby Dusty Chalk » Mon Aug 15, 2005 11:25 pm

Is this the correct puzzle? I screwed it up (I do them in pen), and tried to copy it down to a blank sheet:
Code: Select all
8 _ _ | _ 3 _ | _ _ _
_ 2 _ | 1 _ _ | 6 _ _
5 _ _ | 6 _ _ | _ _ 3
------+-------+-------
_ _ _ | _ _ 8 | 1 6 _
_ _ 8 | _ _ _ | 7 _ _
_ 6 5 | 9 _ _ | _ _ _
------+-------+-------
3 _ _ | _ _ _ | _ _ 2
_ _ 1 | _ _ 5 | _ 7 _
_ _ _ | _ 9 _ | _ _ 8

Are there really no 4's?

PS Great game! I am totally addicted.

As suggested in another thread, I ran the starting grid through the sourceforge program and hit "evaluate". Looks like I missed something, so if anyone has it, I would appreciate it.

As it is it's not quite symmetrical, which suggests there should be something in r7c6.

Looks like what I missed was, indeed, the lone 4. Hopefully, that's all I missed. Corrected version:
Code: Select all
8 _ _ | _ 3 _ | _ _ _
_ 2 _ | 1 _ _ | 6 _ _
5 _ _ | 6 _ _ | _ _ 3
------+-------+-------
_ _ _ | _ _ 8 | 1 6 _
_ _ 8 | _ _ _ | 7 _ _
_ 6 5 | 9 _ _ | _ _ _
------+-------+-------
3 _ _ | _ _ 4 | _ _ 2
_ _ 1 | _ _ 5 | _ 7 _
_ _ _ | _ 9 _ | _ _ 8

What you posted here is not even remotely like the Sudoku published in the Wash Post for Sunday, Aug 14, a different puzzle entirely. I'm a home subscriber in the Wash DC area, and have the original in hand right now. (BTW, the one I'm referring to was labeled Hard, and required a couple of X-wings to solve.)

Oops, you're right. Aug 7.

Grunt. Now I'm going to have to find this week's.

If it was Hard, it would not have "required' any X-wings. Of course, you might have found it convenient to use X-wings - that's a different issue - but the puzzle would not have required them.

Wayne: Thanks for that clarification, I was wondering. I was stuck with that puzzle a good while before I X-Winged it. Have to go back and try again to see what simpler eliminations I missed (though the X-Wing concept is simple enough). I'm currently much enjoying the "Hards" in the Post.
