Unique solutions

Postby Baz471 » Thu Jun 23, 2005 11:22 pm

I had understood that Pappocom puzzles had unique solutions only. However, puzzle number 33 in the Australian Herald sun appears to have two.

Can someone confirm or deny the unique qualities of Pappocom puzzles??

Yes, Pappocom's puzzles have a unique solution. Could you post the puzzle?

The Australian Herald isn't on the list of papers that Pappocom supplies (see http://forum.enjoysudoku.com/viewtopic.php?t=527), so perhaps it does have more than one solution.

Here is the puzzle in question.

By-the-way, the paper advertises that it uses Pappocom

. . . 5 1 . . . .
3 . . . . . 1 . .
2 . 6 . 4 . 8 . 7
. . 5 . . . . . 3
6 . . . 8 1 . . .
. . 3 . 9 5 . . 1
. . 4 . 2 . . . 6

Hi Baz471. I guess you mean the Melbourne "Herald Sun", an Australian paper?

Hmmm. I see what you mean. Are you sure the clues are correct, that often turns out to be the reason.

You can get solutions to all Pappocoms puzzles at http://www.sudoku.com/solutions.php. Enter the first 5 clues and select the paper. I tried this, with any Australian paper with "Herald" in the title, but it was unrecognised.

Wayne, any comments?

The solution is there. "93582" with the Herald Sun (Melbourne). Works for me.

Baz471, the "6" you have at the start of row 7 should be at the start of row 8 instead.

Wayne,

You are indeed correct. I must spend more time checking my inputs.

Simes, as you have noted I am in Australia.

Many thanks for the help guys.
