Advanced methods and approaches for solving Sudoku puzzles

Tried for a week, pulling my hair out

Postby trixiekatt » Sat Jul 30, 2005 4:40 am

I have now been working on this one puzzle for an entire week, and I am just at my wit's end. I learned sudoku a few months ago, and have been able to solve every hard one until this one from last Saturday's Wash. Post. I've gotten it down this far, but now there are so many repeating candidates (4, 6, 7, 9, over and over) and so few boxes with fewer than 3 candidates, that I'm stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Not sure how many eliminations you have managed, but:

Look at 9's in column 9, what can you eliminate in box 6.
Similarly, 4's in column 3, eliminations in box 1.
Similarly, 4's in column 6, eliminations in box 2.
Then look for a naked pair in row 2.

You should now be able to fill in a cell in box 3.

Steve, thank you!! That was exactly the problem, I totally blanked on the elimination of candidates from the rest of the box when they have to be one of two places in a column. (Whatever that rule is called.) Anyway, I feel silly now, and I truly appreciate your help.

No problem trixiekatt.

Everyone has problems from time to time, as can be seen in this forum.

The good news is that there is always someone out there to offer assistance.
